Saturday, Dec. 15th.
Lambton Midget Jr. Sting travelled to play against the top
ranked Waterloo Wolves in Waterloo on Saturday. The Sting were
finally able to ice close to their original lineup however,
co-captains Jordan Hurst and Ray Donkers were still out with
injury.
The Sting carried the play for most of the game outshooting
Waterloo 35-27. However, the Wolves were able to walk away with
a 5-4 win. In the first period Jesse Drydak opened the scoring
but saw the lead dissappear.
Entering the second period tied at 1's Lambton took over the
hockey game but were unable to find the back of the net, while
Waterloo took advantage of a defensive zone breakdown and took
the lead. In the third the Sting lived up to their reputation
as a last period team by scoring 3 goals in the frame. Drydak
added a second and Zack MacQueen and Darby MacKinnon each
notched a goal. Unfortunately for the Sting they were matched
in the period and came out on the losing end of a 5-4 final.
Assists in the game went to MacQueen, Ryan Hunt in his first
game off of the DL, Andrew Sokol, Nick Kozmin, Travis Mullen and
Drydak.
Lambton's powerplay was 2/6 while Waterloo was 1/5
Sunday Dec. 16th.
After the overnight snowstorm in the area the Sting looked to
bounce back against a strong Kitchener Jr. Rangers team that had
lost a one goal heartbreaker in Windsor on Saturday.
The Jr. Sting started strong once again with a goal less than 5
minutes into the contest when Aaron Schieman, playing in his
second game in call up duty from the Mooretown Storm, netted his
first career goal at the AAA level. After two goals from
Kitchener, both on 5-on-3 powerplays, Andrew Sokol regained
the tie for Lambton.
The only goal of the second period was scored on another 5-on-3
by Kitchener to take a 3-2 lead into the third period.
After getting a powerplay of their own the Jr. Sting quickly
surrendered a pair of shorthanded goals, both on the same
penalty, before coming to life. Zack MacQueen, Darby MacKinnon,
and Andrew Sokol all added to their stat sheet tying the game
with just 2:34 to go in the game. Having earned the tie the
Sting were looking to add another score to take home the two
points and MacKinnon delivered on the powerplay with 20 seconds
left to give the Sting the 6-5 victory. Joey Burt delivered a
key screen on the winning goal. Assists in the game went to
Schieman, Eric Belanger who starred in a defensive role all
weekend, Nick Kozmin, and a pair for Travis Mullen. The Joey
Burt, Eric Belanger, Colton Jamieson line should be commended
for their hard work on defence and solid forecheck and it
finally paid off on the score board.
Lambton was 4/16 on the powerplay while Kitchener was 3/12
