Lambton AAA Sting Minor Atom take
Silver in Golden Blade Tournament
 |
The Jr Sting ran into some tough competition in the
championship game of the Golden Blade Tournament.
After an easy semi-final game the Elgin-Middlesex
Chiefs seemed to have more left in the tank than the
Sting in this match between league rivals. The
Chiefs built
leads of 2-0
after the first period and
4-1 after two periods of
play. Despite a great effort by the Sting they were
unable to solve the Chiefs goalie and fell by a
final score of 8-2 to a very talented team. Scoring
for the Sting were Isaac McLean and Brock Perry with
assists to McLean and
Brett Barnes. A tough
end to a very exciting weekend for the newly formed
Sting squad.

Game 1 of the tournament saw the Sting face their championship
game foe, the Chiefs. Lambton held a 3-2 lead heading into the
third period only to see Elgin battle back and take the game by
a final score of 6-4. Alec Dekoning tallied a hat trick while
Colin Leyton had a single for the Sting. Assists went to McLean
with 3 and singles to Leyton and Jack Dunn.
Game 2 put the Sting against the loan American team in their
division – the
USA Eagles. The Sting had a
consistent attack building
leads of 2-0 and 5-0 after the first two periods and added one
more in the 3rd
period to finish with a 6-0 victory. Earning the shutout in the
game was Tyler Armitage making several great saves. Scoring for
the Sting was spread out with
nine members of the team hitting the
score sheet. Goals were tallied by
Franco Sproviero with 2 and singles to Perry, Morgan Halcovitch,
Dekoning and Patrick Wright. Single assists went to McLean, Jake
Burnard and Vaughan Degurse.
Lambton’s final round-robin game saw them face a solid team from
Whitby who they would face again later in the day in the semi
final contest. Game 1 against the eastern opponent was a
high-scoring affair with the Sting holding leads of 2-1 and 4-3
after each of the first two periods. The final frame was
dominated by Whitby as they outscored the Sting 5-2 to come out
on top with an 8-6 victory. Collecting goals for Lambton were
Sproviero with 2 and singles to
Barnes, Perry, Dekoning and Wright. Assists went to
Sproviero with 2 and Logan Scott,
McLean, Burnard, Dunn, Halcovitch and Dekoning all with singles.
The semi-final rematch between Whitby and the Sting would be
dominated by strong defensive play and great goaltending at both
ends of the rink. After falling behind 2-0 at the end of the
second period the Sting came out flying in the third. Whitby ran
into some penalty trouble and Lambton was able to tie the game
with ~ 5 minutes remaining. Another
power-play tally with just over three minutes to play gave the
Sting their first lead of the game. With only seconds to play
and their
goalie pulled Whitby was able to
score to send the game into sudden death overtime. At the
halfway mark of the opening overtime frame Jack Johnston
buried the winning goal to advance
the Sting to the championship game.

Other Lambton goals were scored by Leyton, Perry and Dekoning,
all with one each. Picking up
helpers were Sproviero with 3, Leyton with 2 and singles to
DeGurse and Halcovitch. Jake Wilkins had a stellar game between
the pipes to help lead the Sting to victory.
