Mooretown Storm Atom AE tamed
the Cougars
December 14 - 15, 2007
The
Storm took to the road Friday night to
faceoff against the Mt.Brydges Cougars
and came home with a 3-2 win.
In a
chippy game, played in the old, cold
Strathroy Arena, the Storm got on the
board midway through the 1st period when
Kirk Smith found the back of the net
after a feed from Brett Farr. The
Cougars would battle back to tie the
game early in the 2nd but Smith, with
assists to Ben Anderson and Aleeza
Dobson, would restore the lead before
the period ended.
The 3rd
period would see Smith completing his
hat trick just minute in on a goal mouth
scramble. Ethan Dupont picked up an
assist. The Cougars continued to
attack, closing to within 1 on a late
powerplay goal. The Storm would be
saved by the buzzer as the game would be
called with just under 4 minutes
remaining due to curfew.
Kyler
Raymond and Kaden Fulcher were both
solid in net for the Storm, each coming
up with some brilliant saves.
On
Saturday, the Storm hosted the Cougars
in a rematch and recorded a 7-3 victory.
With
the 1st period flowing with some great
end to end action the Storm would
quickly take control with goals a minute
and a half apart late in the frame.
Cooper Muxlow, with his usual extra
effort, scored unassisted, and then
Sniper Smith, with a set up from Dobson,
would send the Storm into the 2nd up
2-0.
The 2nd
period was a wild one with five goals
being scored. The Cougars opened the
period with two quick goals of their own
to tie the game up before Smith got
loose once again, assisted by Anderson,
to put the Storm back on top. Just
seventeen seconds later, Luke Simon
would take a feed off a faceoff in the
offensive zone and fire home a goal from
the point. Picking up assists were
Hayden Gardner and Muxlow. Mt.Brydges
kept coming, scoring another goal to
send the game into the 3rd with the
Storm clinging onto a 4-3 lead.
The
first six minutes of the final period
saw both teams with numerous chances but
unable to convert any into goals.
Raymond, coming on in relief of Fulcher
for the second half of the game, turned
away shot after shot to preserve the
lead. Hunter Adams would provide some
breathing room, assisted by Smith,
scoring with nine minutes to go. With
the Cougars pressing late in the game
the Storm would seal the victory as
Smith completed his second hat trick in
a row, with another assist from Dobson,
and Gardner finished the scoring with a
late goal assisted by Dupont.
On Sunday Mooretown was scheduled to
travel to Port Stanley but a storm
of a different kind swept through
first to cause the game to be
postponed.
While
not always mentioned in the scoring
recap the Storm defence continue to be a
major reason for the team's success.
Connor MacLean has been a physical force
and Christian Lyle, recently moved back
from wing, has played like he's been
there all season. Jacob Munday, Brett
Farr, Luke Simon and Griffin Dillabough
continue to patrol the point with
confidence and jump into the play to
chip in offensively. The defence corps,
along with the best goaltending tandem
in the league, has helped the Storm get
off to a solid 11-3-1 start in League
play.
The
Storm host Wallaceburg next Saturday in
their last game action before a well
deserved Holiday Break.
