Petrolia defeats Windsor

January 24, 2008

The Petrolia Squires hosted the Windsor Saints in a weeknight game last Thursday and took a long awaited win over the Saints with a final score of 7 - 4.

The Squires opened the scoring in the first with 3 goals by Ryan Chapman, Jason Polera and Jeremiah Goodacre (PP).  Windsor answered back with a single on a powerplay.  Jason Polera scored his second late in the period to give the Squires a 4 - 1 lead after the first period of play.

In the second Kyle Gould of Petrolia scored the lone goal of the period to extend the Squires lead to 5 - 1.  At the top of the third Breyden Belan widened their lead to 6 - 1.  The scoring frenzy ended there as Windsor came back and scored 3 to narrow the lead to 6 - 4.  As the two teams were heading into the final minutes the Squires found themselves short a man due to a penalty and the Saints tried to capitalize on that by pulling their goalie to give them a 2 man advantage.  However Jason Hawes ended their hopes when he scored the shorthanded goal with :51 seconds remaining in the game to give the Squired the win with a final score of 7 - 4.

Chris Houle went the distance in net for the Squires with a total of 22 saves.  Windsor's net minding was shared by Bill Ruggiero and Frank Dayus with a combine total of 23 saves.

Petrolia went 1 for 10 on powerplay opportunities - Windsor went 1 for 6.

The Squires are back in action at home on Sunday Jan 27 when they host Dundas.  The puck drop at 7:30pm at the Greenwood Recreation Centre.
