Rough Start to the Petrolia Squires Season
Oct 9 - 13, 2007

The Petrolia Squires got off to a rough start this week with a pair of losses and a cancelled home opener.

Earlier this week they traveled to Brantford for their season opener and took a 8 - 2 loss.  Brantford went up
3 - 1 that included 2 powerplay goals in the first period.  Brandon Moffatt from Logan Hunter scored the single for Petrolia.  In the second Brantford added 2 unanswered goals and in the third Brantford widened their lead with 3 more goals.  Petrolia scored a single in the third by Jeremiah Goodacre assisted by Scott Hull.

Brantford has put together a big team this year as they are hosting the 100th Allen Cup and are looking forward to winning it all.  Last year the Squires and Brantford went head to head in the Semi Finals in exciting hockey action as Brantford won the series in the 7th game of the series that was finally decided in double overtime.  The Squires have added a few new names to their roster and look forward to continue where they left off  last year.

On Friday everything was in place to start their home opener against the Windsor Saints. But unforeseen mechanical trouble occurred with the Zamboni breaking down near the blue line and had to be pushed off the ice with "Squire man power" behind it.

With assistance from Squire player Steve Barraclough, the crew at the arena tried to put the machine back on the ice but the Zamboni was declared un-repairable before game time and the game was call off by the referee to put the home opener on hold.

Final score of the night Zamboni 1 - Petrolia/Windsor 0.

On Saturday Windsor and Petrolia would finally get their first game in against each other but this time it was on Windsor's home ice. Windsor took the early 3 - 1 lead in the first period and added a single in the second to take the win with a final score of 4 - 1.  Jason Polera scored the lone goal for the Squires on a powerplay assisted by Joe Sauve and Chris McPhail.

The Squires are on the road next weekend to Dundas and return home for their home opener on October 26 when they host Tillsonburg.  Game time 8:00 pm.
