Blast Uses Third Period To Get Win Against the Jets
Final Score:  Petrolia - 4   Sarnia - 5
by Deb Lawrence

In goal for the Jets was Blair Bennett and getting the win for the Blast was John Faulkner.

In an exciting finish, the Blast scored three unanswered goals in the third period to pick up two points this game and two wins out of the three road games they played this week.

1st Period:  Sarnia opened the scoring at the 2:16 mark on a Tyler Lewis goal from Kyle Gallinger and Owen Rogers. Sarnia got into penalty trouble and found themselves playing two men short three times this period.  Matt Abercrombie went off at 8:06 for high sticking and was joined 48 seconds later by team mate Owen Rogers who took a tripping minor.  The Jets got their first goal, a five-on-three power play goal at 9:34 off the stick of Sanza from Skalski and Beck.  Before play resumed, Brent Andriash was called for roughing after the whistle and again the Jets enjoyed another five on three for 80 seconds.  While attempting to clear the puck out of his end, Sarnia tender John Faulkner put the puck into the netting and was called for delay of game.  Serving his minor was Tyler Lewis and the Jets enjoyed their 3rd two man advantage once Rogers' penalty expired.  During the last of these penalty kills, Scott Stafford took a pass from Owen Rogers and put the shot on net but it was stopped with a glove save.

With the faceoff to the right of Bennett, the Blast got off another shot, but it too was stopped before Petrolia finally got possession of the puck.  The Jets got the go-ahead goal with 1:18 remaining off the stick of Sanza with assists to Justin Smith and Clark.  Shots on goal:  Petrolia - 14 Sarnia - 7.  Petrolia was 1 for 5 on the power play and Sarnia was 0 for 2 with the man advantage this period.

2nd Period:  Petrolia continued to carry the play this period as each of the teams took three minors each.  Sarnia's Derek VanVeller was in the sin bin serving a cross checking minor when the Jets increased their lead to two on a Clark marker at 10:47 from Beck and Justin Smith.  Sarnia got one back at 16:59 on Tyler Lewis' second of the evening.  Picking up assists were Kyle Gallinger and Toby Brune. Once again, the Jets scored with under two minutes to go in the period and took a two goal lead into the dressing room.  Scoring the goal was Skalski with assists to Tisza and Iaquinto.  With about two seconds left in the period Sarnia's Toby Brune was called for cross checking so the Jets began the period with the man advantage. Shots on goal:  Petrolia - 7/21   Sarnia - 17/24.  Petrolia was 1 for 3 on the power play and Sarnia was 0 for 3 with the man advantage this period.
3rd Period:  Sarnia staged an exciting comeback for all the Blast fans who attended the game, scoring three unanswered goals.  Although the Jets began the period on the power play, it was short-lived as Justin Smith was called for interference 29 seconds into the period.  With the teams skating four a side, Sarnia staged their comeback with a goal 14 seconds later on a Tyler Lewis goal -- hat trick!  Assists went to Matt Abercrombie and Matt Pereira.  The Blast found themselves on the power play with a two man advantage for just over 30 seconds when Greg Zavitz was called for interference and made good on it with a Matt Abercrombie goal at the 2:27 mark.  Assists went to Derrek Coccimiglio and Kyle Gallinger.

Petrolia gave the Blast another five on three opportunity immediately after the goal as Richardson-Guest was called for tipping but they weathered the storm.  Sarnia's Tony Cicchini went off at 11:22 for interference but the Blast penalty kill emerged with a short-handed marker that gave Sarnia the lead and win. Scoring was Owen Rogers with Scott Stafford and Matt Pereira picking up assists.

The Blast continued to press with more short handed opportunities as Stafford and Rogers almost combined for another goal and then Tyler Cicchini went in all alone but missed the net with his shot.  Both teams took two more penalties, but neither enjoyed the power play for long.  With 1:22 remaining and the faceoff between Sarnia's blue line and the center line, Petrolia called a time out.  When play resumed, the Jets had pulled their goalie for an extra attacker.  The Jets then had six skaters to Sarnia's four when Owen Rogers was called for hooking at the 19:21 mark.  Before play resumed Petrolia took a time out with a faceoff deep in our end.  Sarnia fans held their breath as the Jets scrambled for possession of the puck and the Blast attempted to either give John a clear look at the shots or clear the puck out of their end which they did leading to a penalty taken by Petrolia with 14 seconds remaining in the period.  Going to the sin bin for elbowing was Iaquinto. Shots on goal:  Petrolia - 6/27   Sarnia - 15/39.  Petrolia was 0 for 3 on the power play this period and were 2 for 11 in the game.  Sarnia was 1 for 4 with the man advantage this period and were 1 for 9 in the game.

Sarnia is now idle until Thursday the 25th of October, their only game of the week.  Making the trek from Stonetown will be the St. Marys Lincolns with a 7:30 puck drop.
