Atom A/AA Silver Medalist in
Markham Waxers Early Bird Tournament!
The Sarnia Jr.
Sting Atom A/AA’s were in Toronto the weekend of September 21-23
participating in the Markham Waxers Early Bird Tournament. It
was a very successful weekend for the boys who made it to the
tournament final before bowing out 4-2 to a strong team from
Port Perry in the championship game. Overall for the weekend the
team went 4-1 allowing only a total of 6 goals in their 5 games.
Game one on
Friday night saw the Jr. Sting playing Belleville Jr. Bulls.
Sarnia opened the scoring midway in the first period on a goal
by Aiden Chapdeline with assists going to Kyle Adams and Sean
Kelly. Adams gave Sarnia a 2-0 lead early in the second period
on a goal assisted by Nolan Riley and then Jared Borque scored
unassisted in the opening minute of the third period to put
Sarnia up 3-0. Adams scored his second goal of the game on an
nice unassisted effort two minutes later and then completed the
hat trick with a last minute goal, assisted by Chapdeline, to
make the final 5-0 Jr. Sting. The defence played well limiting
Belleville to only few scoring chances and Riley Collins played
a strong game in net in earning the shutout.
Saturday the Jr.
Sting played their first of two games that day against the
Kanata Blazers. Sarnia again scored first on a nice backhanded
effort by Zach Veenendaal, assisted by Jared Borque and Jake
Armitage and held a 1-0 lead after the first period. The second
period was scoreless but the Jr. Sting continued to press and
early in the third period scored two goals less than a minute
apart to go up 3-0. The first of these goals was scored by
Borque, assited by Armitage and the second was a nice effort by
Nolan Riley off a pass from Aiden Chapdeline and also assisted
by Kyle Adams. 3-0 would end up being the final score with the
defence playing another strong game and Travis Moore earning the
shutout in net.
Saturdays second
game saw Sarnia up against the Pickering Panthers. The Jr. Sting
opened the scoring at the 6 minute mark of the first period on
an unassisted goal by Kyle Adams. Sarnia increased their lead to
2-0 in the last minute of the first on a goal by Ryan Walker
assisted by Nolan Riley. The second period saw each team
pressing but remained scoreless with the Jr. Sting holding on to
a 2-0 lead. Early in the third Adams score his second goal of
the game, assisted by Jake Armitage and then 3 minutes later
Jason Braun scored unassisted to give Sarnia a 4-0 lead with
just over 9 minutes left to go in the game. Pickering however
continued to press and added 2 late goals to make the final 4-2
for Sarnia. Riley Collins played another strong game in net and
with this win the Jr. Sting went 3-0 in the preliminary round
and earned themselves a place in Sunday’s semi-final game.
Sunday’s
semi-final game pitted the Jr. Sting against the Credit Valley
Wolves. This was to be a close, hard fought game with Sarnia
scoring 1goal early in the first, adding another late in the
second and then playing strong defensive hockey in the third to
preserve a well earned 2-0 win. Scoring for Sarnia in the first
was Aiden Chapdeline, unassisted, and in the second Kyle Adams,
also unassisted. Travis Moore, aided by a strong game from the
defence, earned his second shutout of the tournament. So it was
no on to the final Sunday afternoon.
In the final
Sarnia played the Predators from Port Perry. The first period
was scoreless but the Jr. Sting took a 1-0 lead early in the
second on a goal by Kyle Adams assisted by Aiden Chapdeline. The
lead however was short lived as the Predators scored less than a
minute later to tie the score at 1 and then added a late goal to
go up 2-1 after two. The third period saw the Jr. Sting run into
penalty trouble and with two players in the box Port Perry
scored again to go up 3-1 with just over 4 minutes left in the
game. Sarnia however continued to battle hard and with just over
2 minutes to go Aiden Chapdeline scored narrowing the lead to
3-2. Unfortunately the Predators added another goal less than a
minute later making the final score 4-2 for Port Perry. The boys
all played hard, with Riley Collins providing another strong
game in net, and can certainly be proud of their effort.
So with their
first tournament under their belts the boys can now look forward
to starting the regular season this weekend. |
