Cambridge Hawks Down Sarnia Jr. Sting 6 - 0
With a less than optimal
performance, the Sarnia Jr. Sting Minor Atom
A / AA hockey team kicked off their first
game of a double header, with Cambridge and
Kitchener, in Cambridge on Saturday, October
27, 2007. The Jr. Sting allowed the
opposing Hawks to score 6 goals and couldn’t
add any goals of their own which resulted in
a 6 – 0 loss for the Jr. Sting.
The Hawks opened up the
scoring at the 7 minute mark of the first
period on a long shot from the right side of
the rink which squeaked in past goaltender
Nicholas Coady. Less than 3 minutes later,
the Jr. Sting found themselves catching
another tough break as a pass from the
corner bounced off a Jr. Sting player’s
skate and into the net. With these two
goals the Hawks now led by 2 and further
widened the gap to 3 after two periods of
hockey. The Jr. Sting skated with the Hawks
but couldn’t develop any offence the whole
game, only managing to get about 5 quality
shots on the Hawks’ goaltender. The 3rd
period was curfewed due to a late start and
some technical problems on the scoreboard,
but not before the Hawks added 3 more goals
to make the game 6 – 0 for Cambridge.
The Jr. Sting put this game
behind them and turned their focus to the
next game that same day against Kitchener,
where they would put greater emphasis on an
overall team effort and offensive
opportunities.
Sarnia Jr. Sting Defeat Kitchener Jr.
Rangers 3 - 2
The Jr. Sting were back on
form for their second game of a double
header, with Cambridge and Kitchener, in
Kitchener on Saturday, October 27, 2007.
The Jr. Sting came out ready to play and
defeated the Kitchener Jr. Rangers 3 – 2 to
win their first regular season game.
The first period action was
fast and exciting and displayed two teams of
similar strength. Each team trading chances
but it was the Jr. Rangers who opened up the
scoring. At the 1 minute mark of the 1st
period the Jr. Sting got caught out of
position on a faceoff in Sarnia’s end and
the Jr. Rangers offense were quick to hammer
in a loose puck in front of the net. Second
period action was the same as the first but
remained scoreless for both teams. At the
12 minute mark of the 3rd period,
the Jr. Sting added their first goal for the
night when Nicholas Coady came up with a
huge save that forced defenseman Jarret
Marks to rifle the puck around the boards to
left winger John Fazio who fed a nice pass
to centreman Justin Riley-Meyer. Justin
rushed the puck down the ice and shot the
puck from the high slot, beating the Jr.
Rangers’ goaltender on the right side of the
net. The Jr. Sting added their second goal
when Jack Soeder collected a loose puck at
centre ice in the defensive zone and fed a
beautiful pass up the middle to Justin
Riley-Meyer. Justin pushed past the Jr.
Rangers’ defenseman and again fired the puck
past the Jr. Rangers’ goalie on the right
side of the net. Less than two minutes
later, a very crafty Jr. Rangers’ offensive
player made a few nice dekes and then shot
the puck to make the score 2 – 2. At the 4
minute mark of the 3rd period
Justin Riley-Meyer added his third goal for
the game giving him the hat trick and the
Jr. Sting the winning goal for the game.
Justin again beat the Jr. Rangers’ goalie on
the right side after he was fed an up ice
pass by John Fazio. The game ended and the
Jr. Sting collected their first win of the
season beating the Kitchener Rangers 3 – 2.
All of the Jr. Sting played
well and special mention goes to forward
Justin Riley-Meyer and goaltender Nicholas
Coady for exceptional game play. The Sarnia
Jr. Sting Minor Atom A / AA coaching staff
are very pleased with all of the boys’
efforts. The Jr. Sting showed some real
character during their second game this day.
