Sarnia Sting Minor Midget AA
Wins
Mississauga North Stars
Tournament
Nov 16-18, 2007
The Sarnia Sting Minor Midget AA
hockey team traveled to
Mississauga for the
Pre-Christmas classic hosted by
the Mississauga North Stars.
Game
one pitted the Sarnia Sting
against the Ottawa Sting in the
battle of the bees. Over two
periods of hard fought hockey
the score remained 0 - 0
entering the third. Sarnia
scored mid way through the third
and held on for the 1-0 victory.
In
the second game of the day, a
late night affair even for
midgets, the Sting would trade
goals with the York Toros. The
game proved to be a see saw
battle with the York Toros
coming out on top 7-5 in this
wild contest. Ben Johnson played
very well in net in his first
game with the Sarnia Sting AA to
keep this one close. The York
Toros would finish first overall
in this division.
Needing a win to move on to the
semi finals the Sting came out
flying on Saturday night against
the Brampton Battalion. This
game turned into a rough affair
as Sarnia took control of the
game with many Brampton players
getting ejected. When all the
dust had settled Sarnia was the
winner by a score of 6-2. The
team made in to the semi-s by
securing the wildcard spot in
round robin play.
In
Semifinal action on Sunday
morning, the short handed Sting
( 2 suspensions and 1 injury)
would find themselves facing off
with the Oakville Rangers.
Oakville came out of their
division in first place only
allowing 3 goals in round robin
play. This was a tight checking
affair with the teams trading
goals with the Rangers leading
3-2 midway through the 3rd. With
the Sting controlling the play
and unable to get out of their
own end, the Rangers started to
self destruct. With the Rangers
serving numerous penalties, the
potent Sting offence could not
be contained. The Sting scored 3
times to take the game 5-3 and
earned a berth in the finals.
Joining the Sting in the finals
was the Nepean Raiders. Despite
controlling most of the play in
the first two periods Sarnia was
unable to get any pucks by the
solid effort of the Raiders
goaltender ( who earned MVP for
his team in the losing cause )
and the game was tied at 0 going
into the third. While on the
power play Sarnia scored first
and less than a minute later
scored again to take a 2-0 lead.
Nepean scored on a power play of
their own late in the third but
the shorthanded Sting were too
much on this day and Sarnia took
the title with a 2-1 win. Ryan
Dayman was named the MVP for the
Sting. Congratulations to all
the boys on a job well done.
