Sarnia
Sting Minor Midget AA travel to
Chicago for Silver Stick
Qualifier
The
Sarnia Sting Minor Midget AA
traveled to Chicago over the
holidays to compete in the
Silver Stick Regional Qualifier.
After a long bus ride, the Sting
had a late night game against
the Huskies. Road weary legs
were apparent as the Sting did
not have their usual jump in the
step. The Huskies handed the
Sting a tough 3-1 loss to cap
off their long day. Graeme
Wattie scored the lone Sarnia
goal while Ben Johnson was very
busy in net, making several key
saves to give his team a chance.
After a good nights rest the
Sting were back at it meeting
the Flames in game 2. Apparent
very early in this game was the
return of Sarnia's legs. Sarnia
dominated the Flames from the
first drop of the puck and never
let up skating to an impressive
9-3 victory. Denver Spearman
paced the Sting attack with 1
goal and 3 assists, William
Brandon also added 3 assists,
Brandon Moore had 2 goals, while
Jared Milberry, Ryan Dayman,
Jake Currie, Sean Smith, Ryan
Jennings, and Elliot Pecora all
had single goals. Adding helpers
were Jake Currie with two,
Milberry and Wattie adding
singles. Zac Lippiatt played
well in net to earn the win.
In
the second game of the day the
Sting carried on from the
momentum they gained in the
morning, playing another local
team, the Cyclones, Sarnia
jumped out to an early 3-0 lead
on 2 goals by Ryan Dayman and
another by Brandon Moore. The
Cyclones scored two in the
second to get within one and
appeared to have shifted the
momentum in their favor. That
shift was short lived as the
Cyclones found themselves in
penalty trouble and the Sting
powerplay was just too much to
handle. The Sting scored 3 in
the third to put the game away
with a final score of 6-2.
Elliot Pecora, Eric Hicks, and
Denver Spearman all scored in
the third to secure the victory.
Ben Johnson had another solid
effort between the pipes.
William Brandon, Bryan Smith ,
Ryan Jennings along with Derek
D'Andrea all added two assists.
Hicks, Moore, and Currie all
added singles.
In a
must win game the Sting faced
off against Northern Illinois
Hockey League leaders, the
Vikings. Both teams started
quickly in this hard hitting
affair with the Vikings striking
first, with the opening period
ending 1-0 advantage - Vikings.
Midway through the second the
Vikings were awarded a
controversial goal by the
referee, to stake them to a 2-0
lead which carried into the
third period. After killing a 5
minute penalty to start the
final period the Sting were back
on the attack. Jake Currie made
it 2-1 with a nice goal on the
power play with just under 5
minutes remaining. Another
questionable call from the refs
had Sarnia in the box again with
under 3 minutes to play. The
Vikings scored on this power
play to seal the 3-1 victory.
Zac Lippiatt had a stellar
outing stopping numerous scoring
chances, putting in one of
his best game this year. The
Vikings were eventual Tournament
Champions.
Congratulations on a good
tournament and good luck in
the rest of the AA season.
