The Jr. Sting minor MD-Atoms traveled to St Catharine's to play in the 12th annual tournament from February 8th to February 10th. This was the Jr. Sting’s second tournament of the year.
Brantford SaintsBeing the first game of the tournament for both teams, action was a bit slow as both teams got their legs. As the period went on action became end-to-end, with both teams getting some good scoring opportunities. Eric Lange played an important role in keeping the score at 0-0 after one period of play.
Early in the second period, the Saints struck first when they pounced off a face-off and scored on a screen shot to make it 1-0. For the remainder of the period Sarnia played the Saints toe-to-toe but they just couldn’t get any breaks. The period ended 1-0 for the Saints.
Being down by a goal, the Sting really pushed to try to tie the game. Mid-way through the period, the Sting lost control of the puck in their end and the Saints capitalized to extend their lead to 2-0. Sarnia tried to push hard going into the final minutes of the period and with the Sarnia goalie pulled, the Saints managed to make it 3-0 and that’s how the game ended.
Burlington Bulldogs With the Sting 0-1 for the tournament, they knew this was an important game in order to keep them in contention to make the final day. The Sting started the period moving the puck well but the Bulldog defense kept them from getting anhy shots on net. Lucas Cicchelli stood strong in net with the Bulldogs coming hard near the end of the period. Burlington was able to get one goal on a wrap around shot to end the period 1-0.
The Jr.Sting got caught on their heels in the second period as the Bulldogs kept the puck in the Sting zone for a majority of the period and pressured hard. The constant pressure seemed to wear on the Jr.Sting and the second half of the period the Bulldogs got four unanswered goals to make the game 5-0 after two periods.
The Sting got it together in the third and made the game very physical. The opportunities came but the Bulldog’s goaltending was hot and the Sting couldn’t muster up a goal. Late in the period, Brantford was able to get one more goal to end the game 6-0 in the Bulldogs favour.
Kitchener Jr RangersWith the Jr.Sting out of contention, the third game saw them lose their focus and shutdown. Eric Lange and Lucas Cicchelli made a valiant effort in net but the Jr.Rangers had their way with the Sting. The Sting just couldn’t seem to get a rhythm together and keep the puck out of their zone. By the end of the first, the score was 5-0. In the second period the Sting were able to get a goal by Cody Nicolaisen to make it 6-1 but by the end of the second the score was 10-1 with the game ending 11-1.
The Jr.Sting’s next game is on Friday, Feb 15th versus North London @ 7:00pm at the Clearwater arena. highlights brought to you by: |
