A penalty filled affair as the Sarnia Sting
minor Peewee M.D. squad entertained the North London Nationals
Monday November 12 at the Clearwater Arena. A total of forty
minutes of penalty time assessed, twenty to each team, even on
the penalty clock but not so on the scoreboard as the sting came
out on top 7-1. Mitch Hodgins drove the puck to the end wall,
centred from behind the net by James Pavey for Marcus Dusseault
who beat Kyle Smeltzer on the second shift of the game.
Nationals controlled the centre ice face-off
into the Sarnia zone for Ryan Brissette, who fired on net, the
puck went through the goalie to sneak out the other side of the
crease. A point shot redirected by Brissette and covered by Roan
Mackay for the whistle. A nice body check delivered by
Chris Maitland to knock Ashby Spencer off the puck as he
attempted to cross the Sting blue line. Maitland retrieved the
biscuit and skated end to end to get a good scoring chance off
his own defensive play.
Nats follow with an end-to-end rush of their
own, Dylan Tosland coast to coast to finish with a hard shot
taken on the chest and smothered by Mackay. London tied the
score as Brendan Noble passed to the slot for Daniel King.
King’s backhand shot, two feet off the ice kissed the kneepad of
Mackay and made its way into the net. Dusseault fed the puck
from the boards across to the slot and in one sweeping motion
Pavey slid it along the ice and into the lower left corner of
the net. Sting made it 3-1.
Dean MacEachern earned a trip to the box fro
cross checking with 45 seconds left in the opening frame. Shot
on the London Power play blocked at the blue line by Tyler
Groulx and passed up to Eric Cunningham. One on one against the
Nats defenceman, Eric deked to the right, got the shot off and
it hit the goalie pad. The puck had enough momentum to roll over
the top and trickle into the net for a short-handed goal ten
seconds before the end of the period.
Christian Kerrigan cleared the Sting zone
with a pass up the middle. A touch pass by Hodgins just passed
the half, picked up by MacEachern and fired from the top of the
circle to make it 4-1.
Leeam Ridley off for interference, joined by
Nicholas VanBilsen with a hooking infraction. Mackay saved the
day with two big pad saves and then sprawled spread eagle on his
back to stop another for sure goal to close out the period.
Brissette and Tosland team up to start the third, Sarnia still a
two man disadvantage and one, two, count ‘em, three saves off a
scramble, Mackay earned his bacon and then some!
The P.K. unit Groulx, Maitland, Hughson and
Lindsay worked off the remainder of the Sting penalty with
strong skating and were able to pressure London with two shots
on goal while shorthanded.
Kevin Dann on an end-to-end dash over the
Nat’s line with a drive missed the target and caromed off the
end wall to be hammered home by Pavey!
Pavey completed the hat trick on the power
play with Dusseault credited with the helper, his fourth point
of the evening. Dusseault had the puck close in on the left side
of Joshua Villani, who had taken over in the cage following the
fifth Sting goal, and was in a good position to shoot. Head up,
he chose to pass across to Pavey who had the wide open net to
finish the scoring display by the Sting. Sarnia took this
contest 7-1 and will next see action on Friday as they compete
in the Cambridge tournament. |
