Wayne Gretzky
Tournament
Brantford, Ontario
Game 1-
Sarnia vs. Kitchener Jr. Rangers
The Novice Tier 1
faced a strong Kitchener team in their opening game of the
tournament.
Kitchener opened
the scoring early in the 1st period to take a 1-0
lead. However, before the end of the first Nic Discanno was
able to tie it up, assists going to Dylan Schroeter and Ryan
Brown. No scoring in the 2nd period as both teams
played a very tight checking game. In the 3rd, Nic
Discanno then broke the tie during a scramble in front of the
net, assists going to Cameron Adam and Cameron Rannie. With only
1:24 remaining in the game Kitchener were able to light the lamp
in hopes to get the points for a tie. However, while on the
power play it was the heroics of Brayden Groulx who banged in a
centring pass with only 5 seconds remaining on the clock to win
the game. Assists went to Nic Discanno and Max Steeves.
Nic Discanno was the Sting MVP of the game.
Game 2- Sarnia
vs. Brantford
The second game
for the Sting was against a weaker opponent, but it was still
important for the boys to play hard and get the win. The boys
proved to be just too fast for the Brantford team. Early in the
2nd period the boys were already up 6-0, so the
coaches decided to give the boys who normally play defence, some
ice time upfront as forwards. The boys were excited for their
opportunity and Nash Nienhuis was able to capitalize as he
scored his first goal of the season. The end result was 10-1
for the Sting. Nash Nienhuis was the Sting MVP of the game.

Game 3 – Sarnia
vs. West London
The final game of
the round robin was against our league leader West London. The
boys had played this team 3 times already and were very that
they are a fast skating and a good back checking team.
In the first
period Sarnia was able to contain West London with some good
defensive play and hard back checking as well as generating some
good scoring chances. At the end of the period the scored
remained locked at 0-0. The second period saw West London
capitalize on a couple of chances and put up a 2-0 lead. The
score could have been easily 5-0 but young Patrick Kelly stood
tall between the pipes making some tremendous saves including 2
on breakaways. The third period a few more chances were
exchanged but unfortunately the boys were unable to solve the
London goalie. The end result was 3-0. Patrick Kelly was the
well deserved MVP of the game for Sarnia.
Although the team
finished with a 2-1 record, in a 3-way tie for the 2 wild card
positions, we got denied a chance to play in the semis because
of the rules of the tournament in the event of a 3-way tie.
Excellent
tournament boys! You represented Sarnia very well and should be
very proud of your accomplishments.
