John MacDonald Tournament- St. Catharine's
Game 1- Sarnia vs.
Kitchener
The first game of
the tournament was a against a big and talent team from
Kitchener. Sarnia got on the board very quickly, 32 seconds in,
by Cameron Rannie streaking down the right side letting a hard
and high wrist shot go, assisted by Jordan Marks and Max
Steeves. The score would remain 1-0 throughout the first as our
defense play well limiting Kitcheners shots and blocking some as
well.
In the second,
Kitchener began to get pressure on our goalie Patrick Kelly, and
demonstrated their great passing abilities. Kelly made on
particular save going post to post and kicking out the pad to
make a great save. Kitchener finally scored in the second to
make it 1-1.
The third period
started with Kitchener scoring early to make it 2-1. At 8:02
Cameron Adam tied the game with a great effort fending off 2
defenders hooking him, and was able to get the shot off that
just past the goal line. Assists went to Ryan Brown and Marcus
Cossa. Unfortunately, Kitchener were able to get the go ahead
goal catching Sarnia with some tired boys on a long shift.
The game ended
3-2 but the boys played a great game against a tough team.
Game 2- Sarnia vs.
Cambridge Black
Game 2 for the
Sting was early on Saturday morning against a team from
Cambridge.
Cambridge opened
the scoring in the first period at 7:17. A minute later
however, Ryan Brown made a good shot and tie the game, assisted
by Brayden Groulx. The Sting then went ahead 2-1 with a
shorthanded goal by Nic Discanno assisted by Dylan Schroeter.
The second period
started like the first with an early goal by Cambridge making it
2-2. Max Steeves made a nifty play to bring the puck from
behind the net and slid a backhander under the goalie. Assists
went to Cameron Rannie and Dante Fuoco.
Then, while being
on the power play Cambridge tied the game again at 3-3.
The score would
remain tied until about half way through the 3rd when
Nic Discanno broke into the Cambridge zone beating a couple of
defenders and scored the game winning goal. Assisted by Dylan
Schroeter and Jameson Hart.
The Sting won
4-3. Hats off to our defence, (Ben Schoch, Jacob Williams,
Brett Allardyce, Brayden Groulx, Jordan Marks and Nash Nienhuis)
who were solid all game and to Hendrik Lindhout who played net.
Game 3- Sarnia vs.
Cambridge Red
The 3rd
game was an important one for the Sting to win in order to have
any chance of moving on to the semifinals. Their opponent was
another team from Cambridge.
In the first
period the Sting had a lot of chances to score as the dominated
the play keeping the puck in the Cambridge zone. However, the
puck always seemed to skip over the shooters stick or slide
through the crease. Ryan Brown did finally score on a nice
individual effort making it 1-0 going into the 2nd
period.
The second period
saw more of the same pressure, with many of the boys getting
chances. Including a big slap shot from the point from Ben
“Boomer” Schoch which although did find the net this time, I am
sure it is just a matter of time before he connects with it and
it finds the twine! Ryan Brown continued the scoring with a
nice wrist shot unassisted. Following that Cameron Rannie came
down the right side as he so often does and took a shot that
created a juicy rebound for Dante Fuoco to put away. Finally,
before the end of the 2nd Cameron Adam received a
beautiful pass from one side of the back of the net to the other
from Ryan Brown, and quickly took it to his forehand and raised
it over a sprawling goalie. At the end of the second it was
4-0.
In the 3rd
period the Sting desperately tried to score more goals as they
knew there fate may rest on goals for. Unfortunately, the boys
could only muster one more. It was Cameron Rannie who scored
unassisted. The game ended 5-0 for the Sting and a great win
putting the team 2-1. Also, it was Patrick Kelly’s first
shutout of the season, which was very exciting for him and the
team.
Unfortunately,
for the second tournament in a row the Sting missed the semis by
1 goal. It was disappointing for the boys but they should be
proud of there winning record in tournament play. They are now
5-3-1 in all tournament play. Next tournament lets hope for a
little bit of luck on our side.
All
in all the boys had a great time and represented Sarnia
well!
