Novice MD
Tier 2 participate in Blyth
Tournament
The
Sarnia Jr. Sting Novice MD Tier 2
team participated in the Blyth
Novice Hockey Tournament this past
weekend. This would be the boys
second tournament of the season.
Game 1 vs. Zurich -
Febraury 9
Sarnia's first competition was a
team from Zurich. The Sting dominated this team from
the opening faceoff. Ryan Gould
started the scoring spree for the
team with his first of the game at
2:13 of the first period. Assisting
on the goal was Joel Pavey. Ryan
was bumped into Curtis Marks's
center position as Curtis was "under
the weather" for the first game. He
did an exceptional job and played
well at this position.
The
Sting would begin the "pounding" on
the Zurich team with Dawson Young
scoring at 6:02 of the 2nd to go up
2-0. Collecting assists were Brett
Brydges and Nolan DeGurse. Ryan
Gould would make a great solo effort
on the next faceoff by winning the
draw at center ice and going in to
score his second of the game 7
seconds later. Carson Payne would
get the 4th Sting goal, at
3:49. The assist went to Lucas
Knowles. Nolan Degurse would find
the back of the net to put his team
up by 5 at 2:56. Ryan Gould would
complete the "hat trick" with 2:32
remaining in the period. Assisting
on the play was Justin Houle and Ben
Rutledge. Nolan DeGurse would
collect his second goal of the game
early in the third period. Brett
Brydges would round out the scoring
for the Sting with an unassisted
effort at 9:05. Final score 8-0.
Congrats to Taylor Iacobelli for
earning the shut out.
Game 2 vs. Blyth
-
February 9
Next up for the boys was a match
up against the host team, Blyth
Bulldogs. Jakob Knowles had the
start and was quite busy facing 16
shots.
It
was evident from the opening faceoff
that the boys would not have an easy
go compared to their first game, as
the Blyth team was quite strong.
The score remained scoreless until
56.0 seconds remaining in the first
period when a Blyth player was able
to beat Knowles for the 1-0 lead.
The Sting would have three powerplay
opportunities in the 2nd period but
were unable to capitalize with the
extra man. It was not until their
4th powerplay that Dawson Young was
able to tie the game at 1 with a
goal at 9:45 in the third. Brett
Brydges collected the assist. The
Bulldogs would score 3 unanswered
goals in the period to win the game
4-1.
With
a win and a loss, the boys were
relegated to the B Championship to
be played 3:00 Sunday afternoon
against Mild May.
Game 3 -
B Championship vs. Mild May
- Feb 10
As
the Sting were having a pre-game
team lunch, the coaching staff
received a phone call to say that
due to the very inclement
weather and teams not able to make
it to the championship games because
of road conditions in the area and
due to the fact that the arena was
closed, the games would be
cancelled.
The
team played great in the 2 games and
were disappointed in not being able
to show their stuff in the
championship game, but
unfortunately Mother Nature can be
so unpredictable!!!!!!!!!
Next
action for the team is Thursday,
February 14th (yes, Valentine's Day)
when they travel to Oakridge Arena
to take on the Aeros. Game time is
6:00 pm.
