Novice MD Tier 2 win SILVER MEDAL at Cambridge Tournament

The Sarnia Jr. Sting Novice Tier 2 team participated in the 41st Hespeler Minor Hockey Olympics Tournament Dec. 27-29 and were crowned SILVER MEDALISTS in the Novice AE Division.  The team played very well and rose to the occasion and provided exciting hockey games for parents, grandparents and siblings.  It was great hockey to watch.

Game 1 - Dec. 27
Sarnia's first opponent in the tournament was Oshawa.  Jakob Knowles had the start in net and played well, including an awesome save on a 2-0 breakaway late in the first period.  Each team had 3 shots on net in the opening frame.  Curtis Marks put the Sting on the board first with a great breakaway goal. Joel Pavey was credited with the assist. Oshawa would come back and get one of their own just over a minute and thirty later.  With great determination and hussle the Sting would begin to take it to Oshawa and were rewarded for their efforts.  Starting the scoring spree was Dawson Young, assisted by Camden Pomerleau.  Lucas Knowles would beat the buzzer and tuck one past the Oshawa goalie with 1.0 second left in the period. Assisting on the play was Matt Hunt.  Ryan Gould would put the Sting up by 4 with a goal early in the third. Assisted by Dawson Young.  Oshawa was able to put one past Knowles at 7:38 but that would be the end.  Rounding out the scoring was Dawson Young with a goal.  Brent Tunstill assisted on the play.  Final score 5-2 for the Sting.  Player of the Game was Dawson Young.

Game 2 - Dec. 27
Next opponent for the Sting was Aurora.   While on a power play late in the first period, it was Lucas Knowles who put his team on the scoresheet with a great goal ("up where Mama keeps the peanut butter").  Assisting on the highlight goal was Carson Payne and Ryan Gould. Unfortunately that would be all the scoring that the boys could produce but they would not give up.  They continued to work hard, but unfortunately Aurora would come back and score 4 unanswered goals including 2 powerplay goals to win the game 4-1.  Player of the Game was Camden Pomerleau.

Game 3 - Dec. 28
Up next for the boys was a match up against the host Hespeler Shamrocks in an early morning game. Jakob Knowles was between the pipes.  The game was only 48 seconds old, when Dawson Young was awarded a penalty shot for being tripped up on a breakaway.  Although he made a great effort, he was "stoned" by the goalie. It was at 1:10 of the first when Dawson would get his reprieve on the goalie and put one past him to put the Sting on the board. Collecting the assist was Aidan Manery.  Young would get another to put his team up by 2.  Assisting on the play was Ryan Gould.  Young would complete the "natural hat trick" with another marker at 5:30, assist going to Matt Hunt.  Justin Houle would get his first goal of the season and put the game out of reach.  Assists were awarded to Ryan Gould and Joel Pavey.  Collecting his first SHUT OUT  of the season was Jakob Knowles and for his efforts was awarded the Player of the Game.

Game 4 - Dec. 28
The boys had their work cut out for them in the next game.  Facing a very strong team from Stratford (who have "walked through" the round robin), the Sting would have to work hard and not give up to advance to the playoff round.  The Sting were unable to match the size and power of their opponents, but did make a gallant effort to keep the game close.  Although the score was very one sided, the effort was there from the boys.   Stratford was able to score 2 in the first, 3 in the second and 2 in the third.  Scoring the lone Sarnia goal was Brett Brydges, assisted by Joel Pavey.  Final score 7-1 Stratford.  Player of the Game was Ryan Gould.

With three teams tied going into the playoff round, the Sting would advance with a better goals against average and would be facing their league rivals North London Nationals in the semi-finals.

Semi-final - Dec. 29
From start to finish, the fans were in for a real treat with this game. Jakob Knowles had the start.  Lucas Knowles would put the Sting on the board first with a goal late in the first period.  Assisting was Dawson Young.  Burke Roszell (with his first goal of the season) would put the black and yellow up by 2  at 9:35 of the second.  Collecting the assist was Carson Payne.  North London would get right back into the game with 2 quick goals to tie the game. They would continue to crash the net but Jakob would deny them.  Joel Pavey (also with his first of the season) would put the Sting up by one on the power play at 6:11 of the third.  Assist would go Curtis Marks.  With the clocking winding down, North London would pull their goalie with a over a minute remaining hoping for the equalizer, but the boys worked hard and won the game 3-2. Player of the Game, Brett Brydges.  With the win, the boys advanced to the Championship game for a rematch against Stratford.

Final - Dec. 29
Coming into the final game, the boys knew that they had to shut down Stratford's top player to have a chance at the gold.  Stratford was on the board first, early in the first for a 1-0 lead.  The boys did very well to bother  # 2 and try to keep him off the game sheet.  Matt Hunt tied the game at 1 on the power play, 9:35 of the second.  With 32.2 seconds remaining in the period, Stratford would go ahead 2-1.  Stratford would continue to press and would put the game out of reach in the third period including a short handed marker.  Final score 4-1 Stratford.  Taylor would face a total of 24 shots and for his efforts was Player of the Game.

Thanks for the great tournament boys, you made us all proud.  CONGRATULATIONS on your silver medal, it was well deserved.

Next action for the team is Thursday, Jan. 3rd, when they travel to Argyle Arena to take the league leading London Devilettes.
