Sarnia Jr. Sting Peewee MD vs. West London Hawks

Germain Arena

The Sarnia Major Peewee MD team played the West London Hawks in the first game of their best 2 out of 3 series. The two teams played in the cozy confines of the Germain Arena.

Greg Loucks started in goal for the Sting.  The Sting jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 8:39 of the first period when Chase Henne feathered a pass to Brendan Hewton who scored. Tristan Reeb rushed into the West end 42 seconds later and the Sting scored their second of the game.

In the second period, West London were assessed a penalty and on the ensuing power play, Brendan Hewton scored his second of the game for a 3-0 lead. Less than 30 seconds later, the Hawks lifted the puck over Loucks after the defense had trouble clearing the puck. With 3:47 left in the period, Garrett Deley made no mistake on a break away to give the Sting a 4-1 lead.

In the third period, the Sting were assessed a penalty but were able to kill it off. The Sting had numerous opportunities to put the puck into the net but lady luck just didn’t seem to be on their side. At the 9:42 mark, West London scored when the forward, on a great individual effort, was able to deke around the Sting defense. West scored again at the 7:43 mark to make it a 4-3 game. Again the Sting had chances to increase their lead but instead were penalized at the 2:56 mark. Two seconds after the penalty expired, West scored the tying goal.

The first overtime period began with 4 on 4 play. West incurred a tripping penalty at 2:17. While on the power play, Justin Lindsay rang the puck off the post. The Sting kept pressing but were unable to put the puck in the net.

In the second overtime, the play was 3 on 3. The Sting were able to get a whistle in West’s end. The face off was won by the Sting and Koen Gendron lifted the shot and just missed. A West London player grabbed the rebound and passed it to a streaking forward whose shot found its way over Louck’s shoulder. The Sting lost this heartbreaking game 5-4 even though they outshot their opponent.

The Sarnia Peewees play against the Hawks in game two on Thursday, March 27th at the Nichols Arena. Game time is at 7:30 p.m.
