Clearwater Arena
The Sarnia Peewee MD team met the
Oakridge Aeros for the second time in a week. They last met at
the Festival of Friendship Tournament in Cambridge last Saturday
and the Sting prevailed 7-4.
Greg Loucks had the start in net for
the Sting. At 6:55 of the first period, Oakridge got a lucky
goal when the shot was deflected high behind Loucks. Matt
Hodgins and Tristan Reeb went to work and Reeb managed to score
a backhand goal at 3:10 of the period to tie the game. At the
end of the period, the Sting were able to kill off a penalty
successfully as Loucks made a couple of good saves.
In the second period, the play was
fairly even. The Sting were able to kill off another penalty but
at the 5:10 mark, the Aero’s scored on a shot that was screened
by the defense. Less than 2 minutes later, Matt Hodgins found
Brendan Hewton in front of the net and the game was tied at 2.
The Aero’s were then assessed with a couple of penalties to end
the period.
In the third period, the Sarnia team
got a goal on a nice shot from Garrett Deley to take a 3-2 lead.
Oakridge had a 2 on 1 break that was defended nicely by Micheal
Kerwin. Loucks made a great leg save and then the Aeros found
themselves in the penalty box once more and on the power play,
Brendan Hewton took a shot from the corner that found the back
of the net for a 4-2 lead. With 2 minutes remaining in the
period, Oakridge pulled their goalie but were unable to score on
Loucks. Despite begin out shot 19-17 the Sting held on and
defeated the first place Oakridge team 4-2.
