Sarnia Jr. Sting Peewee vs. South
South-East Wild
Nichols Arena
The Sarnia Jr. Sting Major Peewee’s
traveled to London for a game against the SSE Wild on Thursday
night. Chris Winch was the starting goalie for the Sting in this
evening’s match. The first period found the Sting playing the
majority of the time in their own end zone, hampered by the
constant fore checking of the Wild. The Sting gathered some
momentum at the end of the first period and only trailed by one
goal when the Wild potted a goal at the 6:08 mark of the period.
The second period was a more
balanced affair with the Sting and the Wild opening up the ice
for more opportunities and chances for both teams. The
goaltenders were busy at both ends and numerous chances were of
the close in variety, requiring some blocker and glove saves.
The Sting scored at the 4:51 mark with a nice goal from Tristan
Reeb, who buried the puck into the half open net. The play was
nicely set up by Koen Gendron who spotted his line-mate open on
the wing and fed him a perfect pass. The SSE Wild responded in
the last minute of the period on a scramble in front of the net,
to make the score 2 – 1 at the end of the second.
The third period was full of
offensive chances at both ends of the rink. The SSE Wild scored
on a power play opportunity a few minutes into the third which
seemed to ignite the Sting. The two teams traded chances back
and forth until Garrett Deley wired a wrist shot past the Wild
goalie into the net, unassisted. A few minutes later the Sting
were buzzing around the SSE net minder when at 6:08, Matt
Hodgins scored the tying goal with an assist from Michael Kerwin.
The play of the game this evening was an outstanding poke check
executed against an SSE player on a break away, by Sting goalie
Chris Winch near the end of the game to preserve the tie.
The Sting travel to London on Monday
to face the Oakridge Aeros and then hold their home season
opener against LMHA at the Clearwater Arena at 7:00 pm Thursday
