League Playoffs
Sarnia JR Lady Sting
Intermediate BB girls hockey team played in league playoffs.
After finishing in 3rd place in the B/C division and having
been moved to the BB division by the OWHA just before
Christmas
Sarnia had to participate in the BB division for playoffs
and was placed at the bottom of the pool.
Game 1
Their first game was Saturday morning against Niagara County
N.Y. After a slow start which found Sarnia trailing 1-0
after the 1st period, the girls started to get their legs
and mind back into the game (this was their first action
since provincials Feb.22-24). At 5:04 point of the 2nd
period, Kyri Myers tied the game with an assist going to
Stephanie Meriam. The pace continued fast and furious for
both teams and both goalies made outstanding saves .Melissa
Carey in the Sarnia net made an outstanding save late in the
2nd period on a 2 on none from just over the centre line.
This stop by Carey seemed to pick the team up and their play
started to intensify. The 3rd period belonged to Sarnia the
only problem was the Niagara goalie ,she was stopping
everything. At the 7:38 mark Niagara took a hooking penalty
,from the faceoff Kyri Meyers got the puck back to the point
where Shelia Meskens beat the Niagara goalie between the
legs for the winning goal. Sarnia kept Niagara in check the
rest of the game.
Game 2
Sarnia 2nd game was against the
home team Stratford. Stratford had beaten Sarnia in the
finals at provincials 3 weeks earlier. Sarnia came out
determined not to let this happen this time. With the fast
pace set right from the start neither team could afford to
make a mistake. At the 6:32 mark Stephanie Meriam picked up
a loose puck skated down the right side let a slap shot go
that went off the Stratford goalie straight up in the air
and straight down into the back of the net,1-0 Sarnia.
Stratford tied the game with 1:38 left in the period. Sarnia
scored the only goal in the second at 13:28 Stephanie Meriam
picked up a rebound and fired the puck home assists went to
Kyri Meyers and Becky Healy .End of the second 2-1 Sarnia.
Stratford didn't take long to tie the game in the 3rd, ..39
seconds after the puck was dropped the score was tied.
This goal gave Stratford a lift
and they brought the pressure to Sarnia for the next 14
minutes, if not for the heroic play of goalie Melissa Carey
in the Sarnia net Stratford would have won the game but at
the end of 3 the score was 2-2. Overtime, 5 minutes
sudden death then on to shootouts.
After a brief rest the to teams
were right back at it face pace up down the ice no whistles
with 1:05 left in overtime Danielle Laird corralled the puck
in front of the Stratford net and fired the puck past the
Stratford goalie for the victory, assisting on the o/t goal
was Jenna Whitfield and Becky Healy.
FINAL
Sunday morning Sarnia faced St.
Thomas for the Championship. Play was even in the first, St.
Thomas seemed to have a slight edge. Sarnia started the 2nd
a little shaky and St. Thomas capitalized and scored the
first goal at 4:15 of the 2nd.Five minutes later Sarnia was
still in a disarray St. Thomas scored again 2-0 at 9:56 of
the 2nd.
Sarnia used their time out to
settle the team down. It seemed to work as the girls picked
up their game and started to come on. Working harder each
and every shift they couldn't beat the St. Thomas goalie..
With 3:36 left playing 4 on 4 Stephanie Meriam scored with
Kyri Meyers assisting. With under 2 minutes to go Sarnia
pulled the goalie and with play all around the St.Thomas net
Sarnia did everything but put the puck over the goal line -
hit the cross bar, hit a skate, behind the goalie but not
over the line or off a leg or an arm or a stick, St.Thomas
got the puck out finally and took a long shot into the empty
net to score with 3seconds left in the game. Final ST.
THOMAS 3 SARNIA 1.
The girls played hard all
weekend and never gave up, as at Provincals the girls played
well and the coaches are very proud of each and everyone of
them. Sarnia played this weekend with 10 skaters and 1
goalie.
Congratulations to the girls
from their coaches Jim Rawson & Jim Whitlaw, missing this
weekend was our trainer Carol Whitfield who was attending
her high school reunion back in England.
