The
Sarnia Spirit won the Under 14 Division in the Scrooge Indoor
Soccer Tournament played at the London Optimist Soccerdome.
Most of the players were playing up a division. The team
included Goalkeeper Stephanie McCoy, Maria Mitchell, Spencer
Roberts, Alison Sparham, Shelby Auterhoff, Michelle Savo, Nicki
Parkes, Sarah Mellick, Hayley Potvin, Mallory Overholt, and
Nicole Surdyka. The team is coached by Kevin Simmonds.
The Spirit girls went 5 - 1 - 1 in the tournament
with 10 goals for and 3 goals against. (not including shootout
goals)
In the first game of the preliminary round the
Spirit shut out Southwest Optimist 1 - 0 with Mallory Overholt
scoring the winning goal. Stephanie McCoy earned her first
shutout.
In game 2 the Spirit went up against a touch opponent from
Greater London and both sides went scoreless to end the game
with a tie.
Game 3 the Spirit won the game easily over South Huron and took
the win with a final score of 5 - 1.
Maria Mitchell and Shelby Auterhoff each scored 2 goals for the
Spirit with Sara Mellick scoring a single in the win.
In game 4 the Spirit took their only loss against Marconi with a
final score of 2 - 0 but came back the next game and shut out
Southwest Shock with the same 2 - 0 score. Shelby
Auterhoff and Mallory Overholt scored the goals and Stephanie
McCoy earned her third shut out.
In Semi Final action the team met up with the Southwest Shock
for the second time. In this game the score was 0 - 0
after regulation time that sent the game into a shootout where
the Sarnia girls came up with 3 goals to 1. Shelby
Auterhoff, Spencer Roberts and Nicki Parkes each score.
Stephanie McCoy was outstanding in net allowing just one goal in
the shoot out.
In the Final game it was Sarnia Spirit vs Greater London. In
their earlier match in the preliminary round neither side scored
against each other, but in the Final game it was the Spirit that
came out on top shutting out Greater London with a final score
of 2 - 0. Maria Mitchell and Shelby Auterhoff scored in
the Gold Medal Game and Stepahnie McCoy earned the shut out!
