Sarnia Atom Lady Sting vs. Guelph
December 13/08
The Sarnia Atom Lady Jr.
Sting traveled to Guelph looking to avenge their
recent away loss.
The Sting started strong
with good pressure from the line of Lockhart Parkes
and Wardell. The second line of Eves, Wilson and
Ruypers continued the aggressive fore-check. Wilson
won the puck down low in her own zone and found
Eves. Eves returned the pass ahead to Wilson.
Mackenzie spotted Ruypers wide who passed back to
Mackenzie for a shot. Eves went hard to the net and
tipped in the Wilson drive and Sarnia had cashed in
for an early lead 1 ½ minutes in.
Guelph regrouped and a
bad clearing attempt by the Sting resulted in 3
whacks at the puck in front of Norland. The third
was the charm and Guelph tied the score at 1.
The line of Ruypers and
Eves continued their fine play. Ruypers passed back
to Amy McCormick at the point. McCormick’s shot
sailed wide but Ruypers pounced on the puck and
centered to Eves who made not mistake for her second
of the game and a 2-1 Sting lead.
The second period saw
Claire Vanden Eynde deked through the Guelph zone. A
pass to Wilson was re-directed to Eves but Jocelyn
could not connect for the natural hat trick.
Suzanne Lockhart skated
down the right side on a 2 on 1 with Vanessa
Wardell. Lockhart used Wardell as a decoy and fired
a hard shot that the Guelph keeper saved. The
rebound bounced to the slot where Kristin Parkes was
“Johnny on the spot” and her backhand gave the Sting
a 3-1 lead.
Sarnia continued to have
trouble clearing the defensive zone with force.
Guelph looked to score on a feeble clearing attempt
but Norland dove across the net to make a big save.
Guelph however kept the
pressure on and 3 Sting attempts to clear were
unsuccessful. Guelph capitalized on the sloppy play
with a hard shot that eluded Norland and the lead
had been cut to 3-2. The shots showed even at 9
after 2 periods of play.
Sarnia picked up their
game in the third period. Lockhart found Parkes out
front but Parkes was denied. Pressure from Eves and
Ruypers created a backhand chance for Wilson but
again Sarnia could not convert.
Parkes picked up the
puck at her own blueline and streaked past the
Guelph defense. A high rising shot found the top of
the net and Sarnia had a comfortable 2-goal lead.
Guelph pulled the goalie
with 1:15 left but it was Sarnia who had the
pressure. Eves looked for her 3rd of the
game but it was not to be. Final score 4-2 Sting. |
