Sarnia vs. Cambridge
RoadRunners
November 22/08
The Sarnia Atom Lady Jr.
Sting were at the comfortable confines of the SSEC
for their bout against the first place Cambridge
RoadRunners.
A minute into the
contest, centre Mackenzie Wilson weaved her way
into the Cambridge end, a pass in front of the net,
but no Sting player was to be seen. Cambridge
regrouped and dumped the puck deep into the Sting
end. A feeble clearing attempt was corralled by a
Cambridge player. A shot to the low far post caught
Ashley Norland moving in the Sting net and Cambridge
had the early advantage.
5 minutes into the
contest, Claire Vanden Eynde skated end to end. Her
high wrist shot found the top of the net and the
Sting had tied the game at 1.
The goal gave the Sting
some legs and they were almost rewarded again when a
pass from Sarah McCormick found Suzanne Lockhart.
Lockhart found Kristin Parkes in the high slot but
the shot could not beat the Cambridge keeper. A face
off in the Cambridge zone was won by Wilson back to
Vanden Eynde. Another rising wrister from the point
and the Sting had the lead heading into the second
period, 2-1.
The second period saw
the Sting continue to pressure the Cambridge zone.
Parkes skated over the blueline and fired a shot
which was blocked in front. Lockhart was “Johnny on
the Spot” and deposited the puck into the open cage
as the goalie was caught out of position from the
deflected shot.
Vanden Eynde again was
in on the scoring when a great read allowed her to
keep the puck in the Cambridge zone. Vanden Eynde’s
shot from the point deflected to Parkes and the
Sting had a commanding 4-1 lead.
With 2 minutes left in
the second period Cambridge looked to close the gap.
Again Sarnia could not effectively clear their zone
and a glorious scoring chance was thwarted by
Norland, standing square to the shooter and giving
up no rebound. With time running out in the
second period, Cambridge jumped on a loose puck and
streaked down the ice. Wilson made a great hustle
play to back check and lifted the players stick just
as she was about to shoot keeping the game at 4-1
heading to the 3rd.
The Sting looked to put
the pesky RoadRunners away. Sustained pressure in
the Cambridge end saw the puck move back to Vanden
Eynde on the point. Once again a high wrist shot
found the twine and the Sarnia defenceman had earned
her hatrick. The Sting kept Cambridge in check the
rest of the contest and skated away with a 5-1
victory.
The Sting next travel to
Windsor to play the Wildcats. |
