ALVINSTON OPENS PLAYOFFS WITH WIN Last evening, the Alvinston Indians opened up their St. Thomas & District Major Fastball league playoffs. The #4 seeded Shedden Mission and #5 seeded Alvinston Indians after the regular season, met up in a best 2 out of 3 series, in the opening round of the playoffs. Alvinston played a solid road game, led by the eventual winning pitcher John Ferguson, who kept the Shedden attack off balance for six innings, giving way to Charlton in the seventh to close it out for the local Indians. Ferguson scattered six hits over six innings, he allowed one walk and one earned run, while striking out 10. Charlton earned the save tossing one inning, with one hit and 2 strikeouts.Alvinston scored two runs in the second inning off of Shedden starter Jason Dawdy, but could not muster any more offensive production until their final at bat in the top of the seventh, when they added three runs to seal the deal, with a 5-1 victory. After consecutive singles by Theo Metron and Charlton in the second inning, a bunt by Eric Hyatt counted Metron, and an infield single by Mike Black plated Charlton. In the seventh Scott Smith reached base by a fielder's choice and came home to score on a clutch 2 out double in the gap by Shawn Fenton. Metron then followed with a walk, and Fenton came around to score after Charlton reached base by a Shedden error. Metron eventually crossed home plate for the fifth run for Alvinston, on an RBI single by Eric Hyatt. Final score was Alvinston 5, Shedden 1. |
