ALVINSTON BACK ABOVE .500
The Alvinston Indians hosted
Glencoe in a double header on Sunday afternoon in
Alvinston. After a bad turnout on Friday night where
the Indians suffered a 10-5 loss to Morpeth, Alvinston
was looking to rebound on home turf.
In game #1 of the double header, it was a slug fest.
Alvinston eventually jumped out to a 7-1 lead, but the
game ended up finishing 11-8 for Alvinston. Scoring for
the Indians were Aaron Stocking (2), Tim Brown (2), Eric
Hyatt, Scott Smith, Jamie Shields, Jeff Ingram, Bryan
Depencier, Theo Metron, and Ryan Chapman. Driving in
the runs were Joe Triest (2), Shields (2), Eric Hyatt
(2), Depencier, Chapman, Stocking, Smith, and Brown.
The Indians put together a 15 hit attack to earn the
victory. Glencoe created their runs mostly by the way
of the long ball! Greg Eichenberger went deep twice for
Glencoe, and collected 4 RBI's. Kyle Mitchell also hit
a two run homerun for Glencoe in the loss. Brad Young
was the winning pitcher for Alvinston, while Ron Pazitka
was the losing pitcher of record for Glencoe.
In game #2 of the double header, the Indians sent
veteran John Ferguson to the mound against Glencoe
starter Shaun Winship. In the bottom of the second
inning, the Indians got on the board. Scott Smith
reached base via an error, and with one out, rookie
Aaron Stocking clubbed a full count pitch over the
outfield fence for a 2-0 lead for the Indians. Ferguson
escaped a bases loaded jam in the top of the thirdfor
Alvinston, and that got Alvinston back to work in the
bottom of the third. Jamie Shields and Chris Drew hit
consecutive singles, to out runners on first and third,
and Theo Metron followed with a sac fly for the game's
third run. Then Smith earned an RBI when he reached
base via error, which plated Drew for a 4-0 lead. With
two out in the inning, Jeff Ingram singled for
Alvinston, and he eventually scored on a clutch 2 out
RBI by Tim Brown. With the score now at 5-0, Glencoe
swcored their first run in the fourth inning, when Jeff
Tidball singled home Bill Piskorowski. In the bottom fo
the fourth however, the Indians rallied for two runs of
their own. Joe Triest walked to start things off, and
with one out Chris Drew singled. Theo metron then
followed with an RBI single to score Joe Triest, and
then Scott Smith hit a sacrifice fly to score Chris
Drew, to put Alvinston out in front with a commanding
7-1 lead. Glencoe would add two runs in the sixth on a
two run homerun by Rowan Lam, but that's as close as
they would get, as the Indians took game #2 of the
double header, 7-3. Ferguson was the winning pitcher on
the mound for Alvinston. He pitched 7 innings, allowing
3 runs, 5 hits, and 4 walks, while fanning 6 Glencoe
swingers.
With the two wins, the Alvinston Indians improved to
10-9 on the season. Chris Drew, Joe Triest, Brad Young,
and Andy Triest (injured) were voted in as All-Stars for
Alvinston, and will play in the St. Thomas and District
Major Fastball League All-Star game Tuesday evening,
beginning at 7:00pm in Glencoe. Alvinston hits the
field again on Thursday, when the Shedden Mission will
host the Indians in Fingal, beginning at 8:00pm.
Alvinston then travels to Frankenmuth, Michigan, this
coming weekend for the Pete Schwab Memorial Tournament,
where they will try to defend their title of champions
from the 2008 season.
