INDIANS ESCAPE GAME 1 WITH WIN

The Alvinston Indians drew first blood in the best of five semi-final series against the Glencoe Astros last night in Glencoe for game 1 in the series.  This game was a game for the fans, as the Indians closed the game out with a 3-2 thrilling victory in 10 innings.

Glencoe opened the scoring, by counting an unearned run in the first inning off of Indians hurler John Ferguson.  But Ferguson would get back to work, tossing 4 and 2/3 shutout innings, before being replaced by Brad Young for the final out in the sixth inning.  Glencoe clung to a 1-0 lead until the top of the sixth inning, when Joe Triest came around to score to tie the game on a clutch 2 out and 2 strike hit up the middle by Theo Metron, followed by a close play at home, but Triest was ruled safe.  Both teams would fail to score in their halves of the seventh inning, which set the game up for the International tie-breaker rule in the 8 inning. Alvinston was able to take the lead in their half of the 8th, when Steve Donald scored on a 2 out RBI single by Chris Drew.  However, Glencoe would tie the game again, when Greg Eichenberger scored on a RBI single by Mark Johnson.  Both teams would fail to score in the ninth inning, which set the game up for a thrilling end in the 10th inning.  Andy Triest would eventually drive in Jeff Ingram for the game's winning run, as Alvinston and pitcher Brad Young shut the door against Glencoe in their half of the 10th, to preserve the 3-2 win.

Winship was strong for Glencoe, suffering the loss on the mound, scattering 8 hits over 10 innings, while fanning 13 Alvinston swingers.  John Ferguson for Alvinston allowed 1 hit and 4 walks, and 1 unearned run to give the Indians a shot.  Ferguson struckout 5 Astros, in 5 2/3 innings pitched.  Brad Young came in in relief to earn the eventual win, tossing 4 1/3 innings, allowing 2 hits, while fanning 7.

Game 2 of the series goes Friday in Alvinston, beginning at 8:00pm.
