ALVINSTON INDIANS IMPRESS AT ISC WORLD TOURNAMENT

The Alvinston Indians traveled to Midland, Michigan, for this year's most important tournament, the ISC World Tournament, from August 14-21.  The Indians were the 17th ranked team headed into the 48 team tournament, but had their eyes set on finishing in the top 10.

The Indians opened up the tournament against Carey's All-State, right from Midland, Michigan.  Indians starter Ryan Swift and the Indians offence went to work, ending this game in six innings, after the seven run mercy rule kicked in, and the Indians won 8-1.  Swift allowed 1 run (but it was unearned), he struckout 6, and allowed only 2 hits, to earn the win on the mound.  Jeff Ingram went deep in the game in the sixth, when he hit a 1-1 pitch over the centre field fence for Alvinston.  Scoring for the Indians were Joe Triest (2), Chris Drew (2), Ryan Gray, Rowan Lam, Ingram, and Steve Donald.  Driving in the runs were Keith Rankin (2), Ingram (2), J. Triest, Andy Triest, Gray and Lam.

In game #2, the Indians faced the 14th ranked Kegel Black Knights from Fargo, North Dakota.  Brad Young got the ball for Alvinston and allowed 2 runs in the opening inning, while the offence for Alvinston couldn't get things going early.  The Indians left runners on second in third in both the first and fourth innings, failing to capitalize.  In the top of the sixth however, after a Keith Rankin triple for Alvinston, Rankin would score on an RBI sacrifice fly by Mark McCallum, cutting the Fargo lead to 2-1.  However, reliever Shaun Winship would allow a run in the bottom of the sixth, as Alvinston suffered their first loss, 3-1, to the Kegel Black Knights.

With the loss, the Indians were to face Rude Pac, from California, but they bailed out of the tournament, and did not attend, so Alvinston was awarded a 2-0 win, and now had a 2-1 record.

In game #4, the Indians would face another rival Ontario team, the Cobourg Force.  The Indians sent pitcher Shaun Winship to the rubber, and he didn't disappoint, and neither did the Indians offence.  Winship pitched all seven innings, allowing 1 run on 4 hits with 2 walks and seven strikeouts, to earn the win.  The Indians got to work in the second inning, scroing 2 runs.  Lam led off the inning with a  walk, promptly stole second base, and then scored on an RBI single by Rankin.  Rankin then stole second base and scored on an RBI single by McCallum.  The Indians would add 3 more runs in the third inning.  Gray singled, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Drew.  Drew then stole second base, and scored on an RBI single by Lam.  Lam stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, and then scored Alvinston's fifth run on a wild pitch.  The Indians added their last run in the fifth inning, when Gray doubled, and then scored from second base on a deep sacrifice fly by Chris Drew.

Game #5, pitted the Indians against another Ontario team, the Wellington Sox.  The Indians sent Brad Young to the mound, and he was masterful.  The offence went to work in the second inning, when Rankin singled, and then scored on an RBI double by Swift.  In the third, the Indians moved the score to 2-0, when J. Triest reached first on an error by the shortstop, advanced to second on a perfectly executed sac bunt by Gray, and then he scored on an RBI single by Drew.  In the fifth, the Indians counted two more runs.  Gray singled, stole second, and then scored on an RBI single by Rankin.  Rankin would then score on an RBI single by Swift.  After five effective innings on the mound for Young, Young was pulled at the end of the 5th in favour of Winship.  Young allowed 5 hits over 5 innings of shutout work, with 3 strikeouts.  Winship would come in and allowed the game's first run against in the sixth, but Alvinston fought back with a run of their own, when Andy Triest singled, stole second and then scored on an RBI single by Joe Triest. Wellington added two more in the seventh, leaving the get-close and tying runs on second and third, after Winship made an effective defensive play on the mound to end the game.  The final score was 5-3, with Young earning the win, and with the Indians win, they would do battle in the ISC part of the tournament, meaning they could finish no lower then 24th place out of 48 teams.

In game #6, the Alvinston Indians had their hands full with the 15th ranked team, the Owen Sound Selects.  The Selects were favoured to win the game over Alvinston, however, Alvinston gave them all they cound handle.  The Indians sent Shaun Winship to the mound, and he didn't disappoint.  Over seven innings, Winship had only one blemish which was a solo homerun to Andy Skelton of Owen Sound.  He allowed one run on 6 hits, with seven strikeouts and one walk, to earn the win.  Yes it was a win, because Alvinston was able to score a run in the third, when Gray singled and stole second, and then scored on an RBI single by Drew, and then they added another run in the sixth, when Rankin singled and stole second, and then scored on what was the game winning RBI single by Ryan Chapman.  What a game!  The Indians were guaranteed no less than 16th place.

In game #7, the Indians met up against Pete's Blues from Mascoutah, Illinois.  Once again, the program for the day, predicted the Indians to lose to Pete's Blues, but the Indians had other plans.  The Indians sent Ryan Swift to the mound, and he hardly gave the Blues a sniff.  Swift pitched 7 shutout innings, allowing no runs on 1 hit, with 11 strikeouts and a walk.  On the offence, the Indians were able to put together 4 runs, for a 4-0 win.  They scored two runs in the first, and added single runs in the third and sixth innings.  Scoring for the Indians were J. Triest (2), Drew, and Lam.  Driving in the runs were Drew, Rankin, Swift, and Chapman.  With their sixth win of the tournament, the Indians were now in the top 12.

In game #8, the Indians met up against Albaugh, from Elkhart, Indiana, the 7th ranked team in the world.  Alvinston struck first in the second inning, when Rowan Lam went deep for Alvinston, putting them up 1-0 with his homerun.  However, in the bottom of the third, Albaugh touched up Indians starter Brad Young for two runs.  Winship came in the fifth inning and also surrendered a run, and the Indians could not fight back, and were finally eliminated with a 3-1 loss to Albaugh.

All in all, the Indians were 6-2 on the week, and never looked out of place playing against higher ranked teams.  They finished in 9th place in their first ever ISC World Tournament, accomplishing their pre tournament goal of finishing in the top 10.  In eight games, the Indians allowed only 12 runs, and scored 29.  Overall, the Indians posted a 26-5-1 record in tournament play this season in 2010.  Congratulations to Keith Rankin and Ryan Gray of the Alvinston Indians, who both made the second ISC All-World Team as All-Stars in the tournament.
