The Sarnia Peewee Braves were
in Courtright on the weekend for a Major AAA
tournament. Keeping in mind the Braves are an A team
(and all but 3 Minors)
the weekend went as expected
with the kids putting up a decent fight but coming
up 0 and 4 for the tournament. Friday the Braves
lost to Oakville 11-0 in 5 Innings mustering only 2
hits. The game wasn't really as bad as the score
indicated as the boys did not give up any huge
innings to Oakville just steady 2 or 3 runs each
inning, offense was the problem in this one.
Game 2 came early Saturday
Morning against Waterloo. This was probably our
worst game of the weekend as the boys were never
really in it and lost 11-2.
Game 3 but for one bad inning
could have been a win. The boys took on Brampton and
held the lead 2-0 and and 2-1 until Brampton tied it
in the 5th at 2. Then that old defensive lapse
showed up at the worst possible time and Brampton
scored 9 in the 6th to cruise to a 11-2 victory.
Sunday 8:30 a.m. it was on to
the elimination round and a game against the best
team in the tournament the Windsors Stars with
Homerun Derby Champ Rio Anzalon in the lineup. The
boys showed up big time for this game. Vince
Caschera showed no signs of early season arm trouble
and blazed through the Windsor lineup for 3 innings
of great pitching. The Braves kept the game close
and managed a couple runs against the hard throwing
Stars pitchers with Mitchell Bigras and Vince
Caschera leading the way at the dish. Coach Marks
went with a more defensive approach in this game and
while it worked as far as only allowing Windsor 6
runs the offense could only put up 2 and the Stars
went on to win 6-2. This was a fantastic ballgame as
Mitch Bigras came in and threw 4 great innings to
close it out.
This tournament was a great
experience for the boys and should really get them
ready for the A level tournament in Brantford this
weekend. The kids are also in action Monday in
Strathroy.
