The Wyoming
Midgets competed in their 4th
tournament of the season in
Mississauga this past weekend
finishing with a 2 and 2
record. They opted to play in
the B division for O.B.As (a
higher division than required by
O.B.A. rules) and once again
faced some very strong teams.
They started
with a tough loss to Georgetown
by a score of 2 1 after
leading most of the game.
Wyoming then pulled off a 2 1
win over Woodstock and a
come-from-behind win against
Bolton by a score of 6 5. On
Sunday they faced a very strong
St. Thomas team whose season
record was 38 wins and 2 loses
before this tournament. St.
Thomas led by a scored of 7 5
for a while but then broke the
score open with 2 out-of-park
homers late in the game for a
final score of 11 6. St.
Thomas were the eventual
tournament champions.
The following is
a summary of the games:

vs. Georgetown

Craig Steadman
pitched a strong complete game
allowing only 2 hits while
striking out 6. It was scoreless
until the 3rd inning
when Steve Grey reached base on
an error. T.J. Kennedy
sacrifice bunt moved Grey to 2nd
who then scored on Nick Baljeus
double. Wyoming led 1 0
until the 6th inning
when a two-run in-the-park home
run put Georgetown ahead 2 1
which ended up being the final
score. Mitch Robb hit a single
and Kennedy and Jared
Vanruitenburg were both issued
walks.

vs. Woodstock
1
Nick Baljeu
pitched the win with Russ Muhlig
coming on in relief in the 6th. In
the 2nd inning,
back-to-back singles by Muhlig
and Steve Grey resulted in a
run. Woodstock tied the score
in the top of the 5th
but Wyoming got another run in
the bottom of the 5th
when Craig Steadman, Muhlig and
Grey each hit singles. Craig
Steadman, Muhlig and Grey each
had 2 singles in the contest,
while Chris Bright connected for
a double. Individual singles
were hit by: Mitch Robb, Matt
Doyle, Rich Boersma and Cory
Steadman. Walks were issued to
Cory Steadman and Baljeu.

The
most exciting contest of the
tournament had Matt Doyle begin
the game on the mound, pitching
3+ very strong innings, striking
out 7. Unfortunately, thunder
and lightening suspended play
for 2 hours with Wyoming leading
the contest 4 2. Rich Boersma,
Russ Muhlig and Craig Steadman
shared pitching duties for the
rest of game once it resumed.
In the 1st
inning walks were issued to
Doyle, Baljeu and Bright. Craig
Steadman recorded an RBI out to
put Wyoming ahead 1 0. Bolton
scored one in the 2nd
and one in the 3rd to
take a 2 1 lead. In the
bottom of the 3rd,
Bright walked and Craig Steadman
reached on an error. Rich
Boersma hit an RBI single to
score Bright, then Russ Muhlig
hit an RBI single to score two
more allowing Wyoming to take 4
2 lead. Bolton then scored
two in the 6th and
one more in the top of the 7th
to take a 5 4 lead.
Facing
elimination, Wyoming began the
bottom of the 7th
with back-to-back singles by
Baljeu and Bright. Craig
Steadman then hit a two-run
game-winning double for a final
score of 6 5. Mitch
Robb also hit a single while
Craig Steadman, Rich Boersma and
Steve Grey all reached base on
walks.

St. Thomas

Wyoming faced
their toughest game of the
tournament against St. Thomas
whose season record was 38 wins
and 2 loses. Rich Boersma
started on the mound and was
later relieved by Russ Muhlig,
Nick Baljeu, Craig Steadman and
Tim Boersma.
St. Thomas
scored a run in the 2nd
and 6 in the 3rd to
take a 7 0 lead. With 2 out
in the 4th, Muhlig
walked, T. J. Kennedy and Cory
Steadman then singled. Matt
Doyle reached base on an error
and Nick Baljeu, Chris Bright
and Craig Steadman each singled
to score a total of 5 runs in
the inning, cutting St. Thomas
lead to 7 5. The score
remained that way until the 6th
inning when St. Thomas hit two
out-of-the-park homers with men
on base to score 4 more runs.
Craig Steadman walked in the 7th
and scored on singles by Mitch
Robb and Rich Boersma. The game
ended with St. Thomas winning by
a score of 11 6.
Rich Boersma
collected two singles while
Craig Steadman walked twice in
the game. Walks were also
issued to Robb, Doyle and
Bright.
