Fighting Irish meet the Michigan
Wolverines!
The Fighting
Irish Major Atom team coached by Dean Galvin and Jay Peckham
were treated to a NCAA women’s basketball game in Crisler
Arena on the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor,
Michigan on December 30, 2007.
A close friend of Coach Dean’s is good friends with retired
Michigan Softball Coach, Harold Krueger, who arranged for
free tickets to the Michigan vs. Iowa game. As a retired
faculty member from Michigan, Harold is an honorary talent
scout for several sports and has been responsible for
recruiting several Michigan Athletes. He is looking forward
to seeing our girls play in the future and hinted that maybe
they would even end up playing for Michigan some day. Of
course, he was quick to point out that they would have to
leave all that “Irish” stuff at home!
At the game
Coach Dean and team Manager Donna Arcuri both had the
opportunity to participate in contests. Coach Dean had to
answer a trivia question and figured he had the inside
track, when former player Ann Lemire helped him out.
Although Ann actually played with 2 of the players listed in
the multiple choice question she picked the wrong one!! (it
was pretty funny)
Fortunately,
Donna did better with her contest winning 2 tickets to the
Big Ten tournament in Indianapolis this March. Way to go
Donna!
The girls
got to line up in the tunnel and slap hands with the
Wolverines as they ran onto the floor and we had lots of
great photo ops after the game. To top it off, December 30th
was “Father – Daughter” day and each girl received a
complimentary picture with her Dad in a Michigan Wolverine
frame!
“It was a
great experience for our girls” said Coach Dean. “I want
them all to set their sights on playing at this level some
day and I honestly feel it will happen for some of them!”
It was great to see a Canadian girl from Saskatoon,
Saskatchewan as the starting centre for Michigan. Both
Michigan and Iowa had starters that were 5’5” proving that
you don’t have to be over 6’ tall to be an excellent player. |
