Sarnia Sturgeon vs Hamilton Steel Ironmen
July 26, 2009

   Sturgeon Fall to Ironmen 29-0

The Sarnia Sturgeon advanced to the playoffs for the first time in their 3 year existence, hosting a wild card game against the Steel City Ironmen Sunday at Norm Perry Park.  The game began on an ominous note for the Sturgeon as the opening kickoff was fumbled and the Sturgeon began their opening series of downs on their own 2 yard line.

On the first play from scrimmage Damien Shepard scampered 108 yards for a touchdown, but his fine run was nullified by an illegal procedure call.  After failing to achieve a first down on their next 3 downs, the Sturgeon punted and the Ironmen took over on the Sturgeon 30 yard line.  The Sarnia defence came up big and held the Ironmen, but the ensuing punt pinned the Sturgeon inside their 5 yard line.  The Sturgeon gave up a safety on their next play as Adam Garrett was swarmed in the backfield by the defensive line of Hamilton in a scenario that would play out all to frequently this game.  The Sturgeon defence continued to play well and the score remained 2-0 after the first quarter.

A long run by Devin Joseph increased the lead for the Ironmen to 9-0 midway through the second quarter and a long pass and run play in the final minute prior to halftime increased Hamilton's lead to 15-0 at the break.

The Sturgeon defence continued to battle tenaciously, but eventually were worn down due to being on the field too long and the Ironmen scored 2 late touchdowns to prevail 29-0.  With the running game stuffed by the dominant defensive line, quarterback Scott Campbell took to the air but was pressured on every pass.  He hung in gamely and some success was achieved through the air.  Dylan McMichael, Brett Boersma and Chris Kongus all had strong games on defence.  The Ironmen now move on to face the London Falcons this coming weekend in a quarter-final matchup.
