Sarnia Sturgeon Open with Win

 May 23, 2009

The Sarnia Sturgeon opened up their third season in the Ontario Varsity Football League Peewee division with a win.  The Sturgeon’s traveled to Etibicoke to take on the Eagles.  Under the direction of new head coach Steve Belrose, Sarnia received the opening kickoff and marched the length of the field only to fumble on the ten yard line.  The team was not discouraged as the defence took the field and forced the Eagles to punt.

Damian Shepard let the Sturgeon attack all day and on the second possession the Sturgeon scored their first touchdown of the season.  Paul Kaija kicked the extra point.  The Sturgeon defence was very stingy with yards in the first half and the offence continued to drive the ball.  Mid way through the second quarter Damian Shepard took the ball around the right end for his second touchdown of the day.  The point after attempt was blocked.

Etibicoke found their running game late in the second quarter and were able to score their first touchdown.  There two point attempt was incomplete.  The score at half time was 13-6.

Both teams fought hard in the second half.  Etiboke rode the shoulders of their stud running back Zsombor Burany, and he scored his second touchdown in the third quarter.  The Sturgeon defence decided that was enough and through some adjustments from the coaches and players they shut the Eagles down the rest of the way.  They also scored the final points of the game mid way through the fourth quarter with a safety by Brandon Burns. The final score was 15-12 for Sarnia.

The offence was led by quarter back Scott Campbell who had two twenty five yard pass completions.  The ground was game led by Damion Shepard who ran for 100 yards.  He also had help as Adam Garret had fifty yards and Kyle Ross with forty five.

The defence was led in tackles by Andrew Lane and Peter Fais.  A key play late in the game was a sack by Brian Kaal and a knock down by Paul Kaija.  This was a great team effort by the Sturgeon.
