Sturgeon
Bantams Move to 6-1
July 18, 2010
The Sarnia
Sturgeon Bantams continued their inexorable march to the
playoffs with a convincing 67-6 victory over the Toronto
Junior Argos at Norm Perry Park Sunday afternoon. Toronto
received the opening kick-off and were unable to move the
ball on their first series of downs. On the Sturgeon third
play from scrimmage, Hayden MacLean raced 72 yards for a
touchdown. A successful convert put the home team up 7-0
before the game was 4 minutes old. The Argos failed to move
the ball on their next possession and the Sturgeon marched
down the field for another score by MacLean, this time on a
16 yard pass from quarterback Josh Elsley. The Sturgeon led
14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was an explosive one for the Sturgeon, as
they put 33 points on the board. MacLean added 2 more
majors, one on a 67 yard run and the other on a pitch pass
off a flanker screen. Marco Parete scored on a 35 yard run
up the middle. Following Parete's touchdown the Argos
scored their only touchdown of the game on a 78 yard
kick-off return by Mark DelFatti. The Argos then kicked off
and Alex Parete ran that kick-off back 83 yards for a
touchdown. The half concluded with the Sturgeon up 47-6.
With the game well in hand coach Tim Purdy flooded his bench
and allowed all non-starters significant playing time. Adam
Magnante intercepted a pass and ran it back 65 yards to the
Argo 5 yard line. On the ensuing play Magnante took it to
the house on the first time he had carried the ball all
year. Marco Parete kicked the convert. Kobe Lundy had 2
touchdowns, one on an 87 yard run and the other on a 29 yard
pass from back-up quarterback Mason Kett.
The Sturgeon conclude their regular season next Sunday at
Norm Perry Park when they have a rematch with the revenge
seeking Chatham-Kent Cougars at Norm Perry Park. Kick-off
is scheduled for 12 noon.
