Sturgeon JV Win Second in a Row
July 11, 2010

Two weeks ago the Sarnia Sturgeon traveled to Burlington and escaped with a come from behind 27-20 victory.  In the rematch on Sunday at Norm Perry Park no such heroics were required as the Sturgeon struck early and controlled the game winning 42-21.

The Sturgeon kicked off to start the game and the defense came up with a turnover on the Stampeder's opening drive thanks to an interception by Adrien MacMillan.

The home team's opening offensive play was a deceptive one as Jeffrey Johnston ran the ball 57 yards to the Stampeder 5 yard line.

Curtis Robichaud bulled his way to the end zone on the next play and a convert by Adam Garrett had the Sturgeon up 7-0 before the game was 5 minutes old.  This marked the first time the Sturgeon had scored before their opponents.  On their next possession Quarterback Scott Campbell hit Kyle Ross on a beautiful 47 yard touchdown pass.

Garrett's convert had the Sturgeon up 14-0 after the first quarter.  The Sturgeon increased their lead to 21-0 on a short 3 yard touchdown pass from Campbell to Johnson and another successful convert by Garrett.  A keeper by Burlington's quarterback Troy Downton made the score 21-7 at the half.

The home team took the second half kickoff and marched the ball down the field on an impressive 7 minute drive that culminated on a 5 yard run by Robichaud.  Following a second touchdown by the Stampeders the Sturgeon struck again on a short pass to Shea Armstrong.  The third quarter ended with the Sturgeon up 34-15.  With this lead head coach Steve Belrose seized the opportunity to get all his players some playing time.  The fourth quarter saw the teams trading majors.

The Sturgeon seem to be peaking at the right time.  The offense is moving the ball with greater consistency.  The defense is gelling too with big plays being made by the twin towers at defensive end, Brett Boersma and Randy Beardy, the impressive tackling of Chris Kongus and the smothering pass defense of Riley Taylor and Nathan McIntyre.

Next Sunday the Sturgeon travel to Toronto to take on the second place Toronto Junior Argos in a game with serious playoff implications.
