The Sarnia Sturgeon home opener Sunday
at Norm Perry Park was tough challenge, against the number
one ranked team in their league, the Toronto Junior Argos.
The Junior Argos had been steamrolling their opponents and
came into the game as 35 point favourites. The Sturgeon
defense once again battled valiantly, keeping the Sturgeon
in the game until the offence could get untracked. When the
game was over, the heavily favoured Argos had escaped with a
5 point victory.

The Argos received the opening kickoff
a 50 yard boot by Adam Garrett. Their powerful offence was
held after 2 first downs and forced to kick the ball back to
the Sturgeon. The Sturgeon offence was unable to move the
ball and had to punt on fourth down. This time the Argos
drove down the field for a major and a 2 point convert to
make the score 8-0. The defence was on the field for the
majority of the first half .

A key interception by Jeremy
Vanderveen helped the Sturgeon keep the Argos off the board
in the second quarter.
The Sturgeon offence moved the ball a
little better in the second half behind the hard running of
Curtis Robichaud and Adam Garrett. Scott Campbell scored the
first major for the Sturgeon on a 34 yard quarterback sneak.
The Args replied with a single and a field goal to lead 12-6
after three quarters.
The opposition scored early in the
fourth quarter to open up an 18-6 lead. With only 8 minutes
remaining in the game the Sturgeon offense put together an
impressive drive through the air aided by a 42 yard pass to
Kyle Ross. The drive culminated on a 32 yard pass from
Campbell to Curtis Robichaud for a touchdown. A convert by
Peter Fais narrowed the gap to 18 - 13. The Sturgeon had the
ball with one minute left to pull off a miracle finish but
time ran out on their final possession.
The Sturgeon have a week off before
travelling to Burlington Sunday June 27 for a 1 p.m.
encounter with the Stampeders.
