Junior Varsity Fall to Titans in Opener

The Sarnia Sturgeon opened their season in Oakville on Sunday against last year's SCOFL champions, the Oakville Titans.  The game was played in blistering heat and was a physical, hard hitting affair.  The Titans opened the scoring on their second possession with a 25 yard field goal and added a major in the second quarter for a 9-0 lead.  The Sturgeon had their first successful drive on offence as the second quarter was drawing to a close.  Quarterback Scott Campbell was tackled just short of the goal line on a fourth down run in the last minute of the half.  The Sturgeon defence spent most of the first half on the field.  Brandon Burns and Randy Beardy had 2 sacks apiece in the first half and Burns also blocked a convert attempt.  The offence was led by the hard running of Curtis Robichaud and Colin Epps.

The second half began with a 32 yard kickoff return by Curtis Epps, but the offence was unable to generate a first down and had to punt.  The Titans added another touchdown for a 15-0 lead after three quarters.  There was no scoring in the final 15 minutes.  Brett Boersma played tough all game at defensive end and recovered a fumble to stop a Titan drive in the third quarter.

This game was a learning experience for many of the Sturgeon players, who were playing their first game at this level.  The Sturgeon travel to Chatham next Sunday, before returning to the friendly confines of Norm Perry Park for their home opener Sunday June 13, against the Toronto Jr. Argos with the opening kickoff slated for 3 p.m.
