Lambton Major Atoms
November 19 - 21, 2009

Thursday November 18, 2009

The Major Atoms were at home on a Thursday night against the highly ranked London Knights Gold team.

The Jr. Sting tied the Gold team the previous meeting and were hoping to build on a good ending to the Toronto Shanahan tournament where they beat the Albany Jr. River Rats 8-0 in their last game, finishing the tourney with 1 win and 3 losses.
After a delay of a half hour waiting for referees to arrive the Jr. Sting and the Jr. Knights played an even first period with neither team scoring. The Jr. Knights got the first goal of the game three minutes into the second period and scored again on the Power Play to make it 2-0. The Jr. Sting were playing a decent game but not generating much offense. London made it 3-0 in the final minute of the second and that seemed to deflate the Jr. Sting as London tacked on 3 more in the third to an easy 6-0 victory.

Saturday November 21, 2009

The Major Atoms were on the road Saturday at noon in Kitchener hoping to get back in the win column.

The Jr. Rangers scored the first goal of the game late in the first period to take a 1-0 lead. The Jr. Sting’s Ryan Brown replied mid-way thorough the second going top shelf where grandma keeps the peanut butter. The fast paced game was tied 1-1 at the end of the second. Garrett Miller put the Jr. Sting up a goal early in the third on a highlight reel coast-to-coast rush, unfortunately Kitchener replied the next minute when the referee put a nice check on the Jr. Sting’s defence which allowed a Ranger player to walk in alone. The Jr. Rangers got the next one with nine minutes to go to make it 3-2 but Lambton quickly tied it up on Brown’s second of the afternoon. Play continued a frenzied pace through the remainder of the game with the Jr. Sting having numerous chances to go ahead having a 5-3 Power Play.

The referees were constantly putting their mark on the game, which helped the game to get out of control at the end of the contest. The game ended in a 3-3 tie.

Lambton showed great spirit in the game and had each others backs in coming to the aid of  teammates. If the hard work is consistent, the second half of the season shows great promise.

Ethan Hunt played a solid game in net. Ryan Brown had 2 goals, Garrett Miller had 1 goal, Ryan Gould, Max Steeves, Ben Schoch, Nash Nienhuis and Cade Robbins had 1 assist each.

Sunday November 22, 2009

Lambton was home on Sunday morning against divisional rival Sun County.

Sun County got on the board early in the game but Ryan Brown and Daniel Wellington replied near the end of the first period to give Lambton the lead and the momentum going into the second. The Panthers tied it up early in the second but once again Lambton replied quickly with two goals by Max Steeves to take a 4-2 lead. The Panthers’ #15 completed his hat trick late in the period to make it a one goal game and end the period 4-3.

The Jr. Sting continued to apply pressure on the Sun County defence looking for the all-important next goal. Patrick Kelly and the D-men did a great job keeping the high potent Panthers off the score sheet. The Jr. Sting’s Daniel Wellington put the game on ice scoring “top-glove” on a beautiful pass from Nick DiScanno with two minutes to go. Lambton bottled up Sun County the rest of the way for a hard fought 5-3 victory.

The boys likely played their best all-around game of the year so far and look ready to take their game to the next level.

Patrick Kelly played a solid game in net. Max Steeves had 2 goals and 1 assist. Daniel Wellington had 2 goals in his best game of the year. Cade Robbins had 2 assists, Ryan Brown had 1 goal, Ryan Gould, Josh Barraclough, Jack Hackett, Nick DiScanno and Jacob Williams each had 1 assist.
