Sting score 5 goals in third
to tie St Thomas
The Sarnia Jr Sting Major
Midgets A/AA were back on the ice after a long Christmas
break. The St. Thomas Stars came to town and got on the
score board first with a quick goal to make it 1-0.
Before the end of the first the Stars were up by two. St
Thomas continued their pressure and got the only goal of
the second on a powerplay and were up 3-0. Things
started to look bleak but the Sting would not roll over
or give in.
As the third period got under way the Sting's Viktor
Kovacs scored a nice goal unassisted to make it 3-1.
St Thomas managed to beat Sarnia's netminder and were
back up by a 4-1 margin. With 13:03 left in the third
the Stars thought they sealed the deal going up 5-1 on a
powerplay, but the Sting continued to play with heart.
Midway through the period Chris Taylor started
the Sting's exciting comeback and scored a unassisted
goal to come within 3. One minute later Kovacs
got his second goal to come within 2, helped out by
Jeff Noppen and Chris Taylor. A minute
after that, Alex MacEachern scored with 7:57
remaining from Trevor Crawford and Taylor
Smith to pull within 1 and send the Stars
scrambling.
The Jr Sting took control and buzzed St Thomas' net.
With the crowd screaming for more the Sting did not
disappoint. With 3:11 left on the clock the Sting tied
the game on a great goal from Jeff Schroeter
helped out by Kovacs that brought the crowd to
their feet. As the final buzzer sounded the Sting skated
away with a 5-5 tie in this thrilling game.
Ben Johnson was the goalie of record for the Sting.
