Sarnia vs St. Thomas Stars
The Sarnia Jr.Sting Major
Midget A/AA opened their season against St Thomas Stars
at Sarnia Arena. The Sting found themselves in penalty
trouble early, but were successful in killing off a St.
Thomas two man advantage. The penalties caught up with
the Sting however, with St Thomas scoring to go up 1-0,
and shortly after netting their second goal on a tip in
taking the lead 2-0.
The Sting came out in the second period fired up, and
got on the scoreboard off a nice goal from Alex
MacEachern with helpers going to Jordan McBeath and Jeff
Schroeter to cut the lead in half. Sarnia ran into
trouble again, sitting two men in the sin bin, but were
able to kill off the penalty with a good defensive
effort. The Stars would again punish the Sting for the
undisciplined play scoring a powerplay goal to go up by
two as the second period wound down.
At the start of the third period the Sting dominated the
play and it paid off with a sweet goal from Graeme
Wattie assisted by Derek D'Andrea and Jeff Noppen.
Sarnia poured it on doing everything they could but
unfortunately St Thomas spoiled their home opener taking
this one by a score of 3-2. Zac Lippiatt played a strong
game in net for the Sting.
Sarnia at Oakridge
Aeros
The Sting traveled to London for their second game of
the weekend to take on the Oakridge Aeros. This game
started off cautiously on both sides, until the Aeros
managed a deflection off a skate to go up 1-0. Sarnia
came right back potting a beautiful goal off the stick
of Graeme Wattie who fired a blistering shot high top
corner, helped out by Derek D'Andrea.
The second period saw Sarnia take a 2-1 lead with some
excellent work to keep the puck in Oakridge's zone by
Chris Taylor and Ryan Dayman. Dayman fed Ryan Jennings
who made no mistake and found the back of the net for
Sarnia's second goal. The Aeros evened things up on a
powerplay goal before the period ended.
Third period action got under way with a goal from Chris
Losier, who circled the net and flipped a quick backhand
which found it's way into the net giving Sarnia the
lead. The Sting applied continued pressure and went up
4-2 off a shot from Jeff Noppen that seemed to handcuff
Oakridge's goaltender. With 1:08 remaining the Aero's
made things interesting by scoring a point blank shot on
Sarnia's netminder to come within one. With a powerplay
and Oakridge's goalie pulled, the Aero's had a 6 on 4
advantage, but could not manage a goal as the Sting went
on to win this contest by a score of 4-3 to notch their
first win of the season. Ben Johnson played a solid game
between the pipes.
