A hot goalie robbed the Sarnia Legionnaires of two points Saturday.

Ryan Malinowski turned aside 56 shots as the eighth place Leamington Flyers upset the Legion crew 4-3 before 1,253 fans at the Brock Street Barn.

Malinowski, who was named the first star, blocked 17 pucks in the first  frame, 18 in the second and a staggering 22 in the third. Included among his stops was a dazzling breakaway save on Jesse Drydak, who streaked in alone while killing a penalty.

Leamington jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first stanza.

But Drydak scored into a wide open cage late in the period to get the home team close. The goal, Drydak's team leading 13th of the season, was assisted by Anthony Donati and Owen Rogers.

In the second frame, Leamington widened its lead to 4-1, with Spencer VanBuskirk getting what proved to be the winner at the 14:26 mark.

The Legionnaires got back in the contest with one second left in the period when Donati put one into the top left corner. Chase Clark assisted.

Late in the third stanza, rookie Tanner Ferguson made it close, scoring his first of the campaign. Assists went to captain Tyler Cicchini and Shawn Waldie.

  • Donati, who logged a ton of ice time, was second star, while Sarnia's Tanner Tomlinson was third star.

  • The Legionnaires are home to the LaSalle Vipers next Thursday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

  • The loss dropped the Legionnaires below the .500 mark, with an overall record of 9-10-5.

  • Kyle Washer and Jesse Raymond split the goaltending duties, with Washer stopping 18 of 21 shots and Raymond kicking out 18 of 19.
