A failure to stay out of the penalty box cost the Sarnia Legionnaires their modest winning streak last night.

Coach Jeff Perry's Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League squad blew a three goal lead on their way to a 4-3 shootout loss to the Chatham Maroons.

The result left the Legion Crew in third place in the Western Conference with 21 points. Chatham, LaSalle and St. Marys are tied for fourth with 18 points apiece. All three have two games in hand on Sarnia.

The score flattered the Legionnaires, who were outshot 43-24.

Chatham dominated the first stanza but went into the dressing room trailing 1-0, much to the delight of a season-high crowd of almost 1,500 fans.

Joel Steeves put the home team ahead when he accepted a perfect pass from Captain Tyler Cicchini and scored on a two-on-one break with the game was less than nine minutes old. Owen Rogers also earned an assist on the play.

In the second frame it was more of the same. Chatham matched Sarnia in shots at 10 each, but was outscored 2-1.

Cicchini made it 2-0 when he scored his eighth of the campaign at the 10:07 mark, shooting the puck into a yawning cage. Tanner Ferguson and Chase Clark were credited with helpers on the powerplay goal.

Less than a minute later Brent Sauve scored his first of the year to give the Sarnians what looked like a comfortable 3-0 lead. Tanner Garrick and Andy Sokol got the assists.

But flashy defenceman Keith Maisonville scored a powerplay goal shortly after that to cut the lead to 3-1 heading into the third.

With the clock winding down, Rogers took a needless penalty, tossing a Maroon into his own bench. Thor Skalski scored on the ensuing powerplay, drawing the visitors within one goal with under two minutes left.

In the final minute of play, with goalie Mike Ostropolec on the bench for a sixth attacker, Kyle Makaric got the equalizer.

Sarnia played its best hockey of the game in the overtime, just missing two glorious chances, including one in which Jesse Drydak rifled a shot wide on a three-on-one break.

In the shootout, Derek Nap scored a beautiful goal for Sarnia, faking Ostropolec out of position before hitting the back of the twine. But Chatham scored twice on Kyle Washer to skate off with the victory.

  • Strangely, Sarnia was given two of the three stars, including the first star, despite being outplayed almost from start to finish.

  • The Legionnaires return to action tonight when they travel to St. Marys to face the Lincolns. Jesse Raymond is expected to get the start in net.

  • Chatham was two-for-10 on the powerplay while Sarnia was one-for-five.

  • The loss ended a three-game winning streak for the Legionnaires, who nevertheless have picked up seven of a possible eight points in their last four games.
