The LaSalle Vipers have won the all-Ontario Jr. 'B' championship.
The Essex County team defeated the Brantford Golden Eagles 3-2 in double overtime Thursday to capture the Sutherland Cup in five games. It was the first provincial crown for the Vipers, who moved to LaSalle in 2008 from Tecumseh.
During the regular schedule, the Vipers had their hands full with the Sarnia Legionnaires, losing two of three home games against them. But LaSalle took the season series 4-2 by winning all three trips they made to the Sarnia Arena.
The Sarnians beat the Vipers 4-2 on Oct. 21, 2009 and 5-3 on Jan. 13, 2010.
Tyler Cicchini of the Legionnaires had more success against the eventual champs than most Greater Ontario Hockey League players. In fact, the Sarnia captain scored four goals in six meetings with the Vipers, including a pair of shorthanded markers. Chase Clark was also hot against LaSalle, denting the twine three times against them last winter.
