The Sarnia Jr. Sting Atom A/AA hockey team opened up their
season this past weekend with a pair of losses.
On Saturday,
in Stratford, the Sting and Warriors played to a scoreless
opening period. The play started to open up in the 2nd
period with the Sting creating several quality chances but
unable to find the net. Stratford was able to open up a 3 –
0 advantage as the period ended. After Stratford scored
early in the 3rd period to take a 4 – 0 lead, the
Sting came storming back with goals by Austin Coutts, Jack
Smith and Brett Allardyce (assist Jake Vince) to narrow the
lead to 4 – 3. With time winding down, the Sting were
unable to get goalie Max Musico pulled and Stratford scored
a late goal for a final score of Stratford 5, Sarnia 3.
On Sunday in
St. Thomas, the Sting came out determined at the start of
the game, but were victimized by some unfortunate bounces
and found themselves behind 3 – 0 at the end of the first
period. In the second period, Sarnia continued to create
traffic to the front of the St. Thomas goal, but were unable
to get the puck by the Stars netminder. After falling
behind 6 – 0 at the beginning of the 3rd period
the Sting continued to battle hard and Brett Allardyce
(assist Matthew Torti, Lucas Ross) poked home a loose puck
with only a minute left in the game for a final score of St.
Thomas 6, Sarnia 1.
