Sarnia Legionnaires at Guelph Hurricanes

Kyle Washer and Mike Reed must feel like they're in a shooting gallery these days.

The two Legionnaire goalies have been bombarded with an average of more than 50 pucks a game during the Sarnia Jr. 'B' hockey club's last four outings.

Last night, the pair were given about as much protection as fish in a barrel, facing a withering 53 shot barrage from the powerhouse Guelph Hurricanes.

When the smoke cleared, the Hurricanes, who are in first place in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League's Midwestern Conference, had scored a 7-2 win over the Legionnaires, who sit in eighth in the Western Ontario Conference.

In fairness, Sarnia has played much of the campaign without two of its best defencemen (Tanner Ferguson who has been injured and Steve Farlow who is ill). And even before they went down, defence was considered the team's Achilles heel.

So perhaps it's not surprising that they've surrendered 208 shots on goal over the past four games, or an average of 52 per contest.

Amazingly, Reed and Washer have been able to hold the Legionnaires in most games. They even managed to salvage two points for the club during those four outings. And both have been named game stars during that stretch.

Shorthanded goals

The Legionnaires were in deep trouble in the Royal City last night before the game was even six minutes old. Guelph scored two shorthanded markers during that time frame to grab a 3-0 lead. And the home team was ahead by four goals at the end of the first stanza.

The second period was the only one in which Sarnia did anything of note. Shawn Waldie picked up his fifth of the season and Owen Rogers notched his fourth.

Statistics show those two veteran forwards are contributing at a good clip. Waldie, in fact, has 13 points in 16 games, while Rogers has 10 points in the 12 games he's played.

  • Captain Tyler Cicchini, Brett Thompson, Jordan McBeath and Derek D'Andrea had assists for Sarnia.

  • Brent Sauve, Jeff Schroeter and Andy Sokol were all given game misconducts. Schroeter was ejected for checking from behind, Sauve for fighting and Sokol for an incident that started with him inciting an opponent.

  • The Legionnaires had 23 shots on net.

  • Sarnia has now lost two in a row in regulation time. The team returns to action Thursday when it hosts the Chatham Maroons. Game time at the Brock Street Barn is 7:10 p.m.
