Mooretown Flags off to a
great start
Rookie Mike Burns earns 5 points in season &
home openers!
The Flags celebrated
their season opener and home opener with a pair
of wins over the weekend. On Friday the
Flags travelled to Dresden and came home with a
5 - 2 win over the Kings.
Mooretown scored
first midway in the first period by Cody Chute
assisted by Chris Cloutier and Mike Burns.
Less than a minute later Tyler Fraser found the
opening and made it 2 - 0. Dresden's Joel
Price was given a penalty shot which he
capitalize on and the 1st period would end with
the Flags leading 2 - 1.
In the second period
16 year old rookie Mike Burns had an outstanding
night scoring the next two goals, the first
assisted by Jordan Pennesi and Lee Bartley and
the second on the power play assisted by Donny
Bowling.
The period would end
with the Flags leading 4 - 1.

Heading
into the 3rd period the Flags were a
man short and the Kings scored with
the extra man advantage with Aaron
Gibbings earning his first goal on
the powerplay. With the
Flags leading 4 - 2 the Kings pulled
their goalie in the attempt to
narrow the gap however Mike Burns
took the shot into the empty net
earning him his third goal and the
hat trick for a total of 4 points
for the night. The game ended
with a final score of 5 - 2. |
Home Opener

On Saturday the
Flags were at home for their 2007 - 2008 home
opener with a large crowd on hand. Their
opponents in the home opener were the Blenheim
Blades. The Flags didn't get off to a good start
as the Blades took the early lead with just :50
seconds off the clock. Scoring for the
Blades was Joel Stepniak. The Flags came
back less than a minute later to even the game
when Donny Bowling scored on a power play.
Earning the assist on the goal was Brent
Belanger. The period continued and ended
with both sides even at 1 each.

In the second period Blenheim would
regain the lead when Patrick
Lomoscolo scored with 5:49 remaining
in the period. As the action
continued and with just :42 seconds
left in the period Mike Burns scored
his 4th goal of the weekend to tie
the game at 2 - 2 heading into the
dressing room. Assisting on
the goal was Jamie Aikin. |
Third period the
Blades ran into penalty trouble as the Flags
scored the next two goals with the extra man
advantage. The first by Lee Bartley
assisted by Jack Garrettson and Adam Teschke,
and the second by Tyler Fraser from Jordan
Pennesi and Spencer Lightfoot. The Flags
went on and scored their final goal with just
under 5 minutes left in the game with Nathan
Dalgety scoring assisted by Jack Garrettson and
Spencer Lightfoot. The game ended with the
same score as the night before with a final 5 -
2 for the Flags. The Flags went 3 for 7 in
powerplay opportunities as the Blades went 0 -
8. In net for the win was Justin Belanger
with a total of 19 saves. Mike Touma was
busier in the other end with a total of 32
saves.
Next up for the
Flags is a road trip down river on Wed Sept 25
when they go up against league rivals
Wallaceburg Lakers. Game time 7:30 pm.
