Kings Maintain First Place with Win Over Flags
Final Score:  Dresden - 4   Mooretown - 2
by Deb Lawrence

Despite the snowy and wintery weather just over 200 people took in the game, including a small but vocal group for the visiting Jr. Kings.  Tonight's game featured the two teams battling for first place in the North Division.  This evening's sponsor was Micor Sports.   In goal for Dresden was Eric Steinman and between the pipes for the Flags loss was Kyle Washer.

The game started with the team both a bit tentative in their play with each of them taking two penalties each before a goal was finally scored.  With Mike Burns of Mooretown off at 13:40 for roughing, a shot slipped over the shoulder of Washer and into the net for the first marker of the game.   Scoring it at 14:43 was Scott Gawne from Drew Poissant and Dan Hyatt. The Flags applied some pressure and were rewarded with open shots at net but could not find the right angle or get a man in possession of the puck.  Instead it was Dresden notching their second of the period with 1:31 remaining off the stick of Jeremy Park from Ryan Cook and Scott Gawne.  Shots on goal:  Dresden - 16   Mooretown - 14.  The Jr Kings were 1 for 2 with the man advantage and Mooretown was 0 for 2 on the power play this period.

In the second stanza the Jr Kings came out flying and within the first two minutes rang shots twice off the left of post of Washer.  Not to be outdone the Flags rang one off the far side post near the 4:20 mark and this was as close as anyone came to scoring.  Dresden did have a good 2 on 1 breakout and raced up the ice but upon trying to make the shot found it battered away by one of the sprawling "D" of the Flags.  Shots on goal:  Dresden - 15/31 Mooretown - 14/28.  The Jr Kings were 0 for 2 with the man advantage and Mooretown was 0 for 1 on the power play this period.

The Flags began this period of play with a man short as Clark MacPherson took a roughing minor with 22 seconds remaining in the second but didn't have to kill the entire 1:38 as Dresden's Taylor Pickering was called for holding 53 seconds into the period.  This game the Flags a power play and they made good on it.  Lighting the lamp red for the home team at the 1:39 mark was Cody Chute with assists picked up by Adam Teschke and Travis Mullen. Then a shot on the Jr Kings goalie was made and the initial save was made but the puck bounced up in a very strange manner and flipped over his shoulder and into the net.  Scoring the goal to notch the game at two apiece was Dave Hutchinson and helpers went to Travis Mullen and Donny Bowling.  A bit of scrum led to offsetting roughing minors at the 7:42 mark as the game got a bit chippy and intense.  Then at 8:40 a bit of a tilt took place. Apparently an initial slashing minor was going to be called to Mike Burns of the Flags but exception to the slash was taken by Jim Rouse of Dresden who initiated a fight with Burns. Rouse received a minor for instigator (and will be missing from the next game his team plays because of it), and both received the usual 5 minute major for fighting along with a game misconduct.  Dresden began to press for the go-ahead goal, putting plenty of bodies and traffic in front of Washer - and it paid off at the 16:15 mark with what would prove to be the game winning goal.  It was scored by Joel Stepniak from Kyle Vink and Joe Deboer.  With under a minute to go and the play deep in Dresden's end, Washer of the Flags was making his way to the bench for an extra attacker but never got there as the Jr Kings got possession of the puck.  Washer scrambled quickly to return to the net but by the time he drew near the puck was already in the net salting the win for Dresden.  As the final buzzer sounded, tilt number two took place with the Dresden player getting a head start in the removal of his hockey uniform.  Shots on goal:  Dresden - 8/39   Mooretown - 10/38.  Dresden had not power play chances this period and were 1 for 4 in the game.   Mooretown was 0 for 1 with the man advantage this period and were also 1 for 4 in the game.
