Third Period Does In the Flags

Final Score:  Wallaceburg - 5   Mooretown - 3

by Deb Lawrence

A good crowd of over 400 turned out to see the home town Lakes pick up their 12th win of the season and edge them closer to second place currently held by the Flags.  In goal for Wallaceburg was Steve Noyle and taking the loss for Mooretown was Justin Belanger.

In the first frame  Wallaceburg opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 6:20 off the stick of Blain Hopkins.  The Flags responded with two before the period was over, taking a 2-1 lead into the dressing room after 20 minutes of play.  Tying the game at 13:18 was Josh Teschke with an assist picked up by by Jack Garrettson.  With 1:31 remaining Mooretown's Tyler Fraser gave the visitors the lead and helping on the goal were Adam Teschke and Cody Chute.  The shots on goal were 11 apiece.  Wallaceburg was 0 for 1 with the man advantage while Mooretown was 0 for 2 on the power play this period.

In the second stanza no scoring took place but one tilt did take place and off to the showers with 2:46 remaining were Tristan Carswell of Wallaceburg along with Mooretown's Spencer Lightfoot.  Shots on goal were again the same for both teams - nine each for a total of 20 after two periods.  The Lakers were 0 for 2 with the man advantage while the Flags were  for 3 on the power play this period.

It was during this final 20 minutes of play that the wheels came off for the Flags.  Things began well when Mike Burns gave Mooretown a two goal lead at the 5:05 mark with assists picked up by Jordan Pennesi and Josh Teschke.  The Lakes responded with four unanswered goals beginning with a Chris Lalonde marker  8:23 from Joe Jacobs.  Tying the game at three each was Nash Lozon at 10:38 with assists to Josh Beatty and Jordan Franchuk.  Only 31 seconds separated the next two goals.  The winner, at 13:05, was scored by Blain Hopkins from Cam Patterson and Dustin Howliett while Josh Beatty salted the win for the home town team.  Assists on the final Lakers goal went to Jordan Franchuk and Nash Lozon.  The Flags got into a bit of trouble when Mike Burns went off at 17:28 for slashing and was joined seven seconds later when team mate Travis Mullen was called for holding the stick - they weathered the 1:53 of playing two men short.  With 1:50 remaining in the game round number two took place along with other minors and a 10 minutes misconduct but in the end no one had a PP.   Shots on goal:  Wallaceburg - 16/36 Mooretown - 11/3.  The Lakers were 0 for 4 with the man advantage this period and were 0 for 7 in the game.  Mooretown was 0 for 1 on the power play this period and were 0 for 6 in the game.

The Flags close out 2008 with a home game on Saturday December 20th when the Alvinston Flyers pay a visit to the Mooretown Sports Complex.
