Flags Losing
Woes Continue
Final Score:
Alvinston - 7 Mooretown - 4
by Deb Lawrence
It was a somewhat
small and subdued crowd of 189 that left the
Mooretown Sports Complex saddened by the fourth
loss in a row by the Flags. The loss puts them
at 1-5 for December and they now sport a 14-13-1
record for the season.
Getting the win
for the Lakers was Brodij Gerryts and
starting in goal for Mooretown (but not taking
the loss) was Kyle Washer who gave up
four goals on 23 shots in the 23:11 he played.
Justin Belanger finished the game for the
Flags and was tagged with the loss, giving up
three goals on 19 shots faced. It was a rough
night for both Flags tenders.
In the first
period Alvinston showed that they are a better
team than the record they were sporting at the
beginning of the game (8-16-2) by not only
scoring the first goal but getting it while
short-handed. It was an omen of things to come
for the rest of the game. With Lewis off for
roughing after the whistle at 1:53, the Flyers
opened the scoring 56 seconds later on an
unassisted marker by Jordan Flanagan.
Mooretown replied with a goal to notch the game
at one each when Adam Teschke lit the
lamp red to the delight of the home team fans.
Assists were picked up by Tyler Fraser
and Steve Mercier. Alvinston regained
the lead on a Steven Wells goal at the
7:43 mark with helpers to Mitch Coultes
and Scott McPhail. The Flags killed off
a couple of penalties, including a two man
shortage of 11 seconds but couldn't clear the
puck out of their end and Wells popped in
his second of the evening at 13:58 while
Chris Edwards picked up the assist.
Mooretown found themselves once again on the PK
and successfully killed off 1:23 of a five on
three opportunity for the Flyers. The second of
these two penalties was a checking from behind
minor with 47 seconds remaining in the period
and getting to watch the rest of the game from
the stands was Clark MacPherson. Shots on
goal: Alvinston - 20 Mooretown - 8. The
Flyers were 0 for 4 with the man advantage while
the Flags were 0 for 1 on the power play this
period.
In the second
stanza things got a bit better for the Flags as
they were only outscored 2 to 1 but it was
Alvinston's fourth goal of the game a 3:11 that
chased Washer from the game. Scoring a natural
hat trick with the puck from behind the red goal
line to the left of Washer was Steven Wells
unassisted. In came Belanger to take over the
tending duties for the Flags. The first bout of
the evening came as a result of a cross checking
minor that would have sent Jack Garrettson of
the Flags to the sin bin for just two minutes
beginning at the 6:09 mark but instead he and
Jake Unsworth each picked up roughing minors,
fighting majors and the mandatory game
misconduct. The Flags bench was now down to 18
and they were also playing a man short. The PP
for Alvinston only lasted 42 seconds as McPhail
was called for roughing. With the teams now
playing four a side Alvinston made it a four
goal lead just a minute later on a James
McFarlane goal from Jordan Flanagan.
Letting rip a shot from the right wing near the
top of the face off circle was Dave
Hutchinson and it beat Gerryts on the long
side. The lone assist went to Jeff Paulley.
While the Flags were on the penalty kill and
about a minute remaining in the period a couple
of good short-handed chances developed
especially when a fat rebound was made available
but the puck wasn't shot high enough to get over
the downed Flyers tender. The Flags would begin
the third period a man short as Adam Teschke was
called for high sticking with 30 seconds
remaining on the clock. Shots on goal:
Alvinston - 11/31 Mooretown - 12/20. The
Flyers were 0 for 2 with the man advantage
(although there was a bit of a third one most of
it would be carried to the third period) and the
Flags were 0 for 1 on the power play this
period.
The third period
began ominously for the Flags when Jordan
Flanagan restored the four goal lead with a
power play goal at the 1:18 mark with Adam
Steadman and Mitch Coultes picking up
assists. Mooretown responded with a power play
goal of their own at 4:04 with William McLeod
off serving a cross checking minor. Letting go
a shot from inside the blue line was Jordan
Pennesi with Nick Kozmin picking up
the lone goal. Spencer Lightfoot of Mooretown
spent 10 minutes cooling off in the sin bin
beginning at the five minute mark as he was
called for inciting an opponent that apparently
didn't want to go. Alvinston notched their
final goal of the game at 6:45 off the stick of
Jason McPhail from Vance Jardine
and Scott McPhail. Responding with their
final goal of the game 25 seconds later was
Mooretown's Josh Teschke who popped it in
unassisted. Mooretown did get a couple more
power play chances, including 25 seconds with a
two man advantage but could not find the back of
the net. At 19:18 Jeff Pauley got a head start
to the showers when he was called for hooking
and joining him 20 seconds later was team mate
Spencer Lightfoot who was involved in bout two
against Michael Lewis - both of these pugilists
received the usual five and a game. Shots on
goal: Alvinston - 11/42 Mooretown - 13/33.
The Flyers were 1 for 2 with the man advantage
this period and were 1 for 8 in the game. The
Flags were 1 for 3 on the power play this period
and were 1 for 5 in the game.
The Flags
have no further games this month - December.
They begin the new year with a home game on
Saturday January 3rd, 2009 against the
Wallaceburg Lakers. It's a 7:30 puck drop.
That same
weekend they travel to Alvinston on Sunday the
4th to play a 2:30 game against these same
Flyers.
