Flags Come Up
on Short End Against Sharks
Final Score:
Wheatley - 4 Mooretown - 3
by Deb Lawrence
A small crowd of
140 took in this evening's game a the Mooretown
Sports Complex and saw the Flags drop a
heartbreaker to the Wheatley Sharks. The Flags
sported a few new (and not so new) faces this
evening. Returning to the fold, after a stint
with Sarnia's Jr B club, was Clark MacPherson.
Joining him also from the Legionnaires were Dave
Hutchinson and tonight's starting goaltender for
the Flags Kyle Washer. In net for
Wheatley was Marc Tremblay.
The Flags started out with guns blazing during
the first minute or two of the game, ringing one
off the post before the period was 60 seconds
old. They would get the first goal of the game
- their only lead, at the 11:38 mark on a
Mike Burns goal with assists picked up by
Adam Little and Josh Teschke. Near
the 16 minute mark it seemed Wheatley had tied
it up but the referee's initial call was no
goal. After a brief conference with the other
two officials, the call remained as it was first
called - no goal. Shots on goal: Wheatley -
7 Mooretown - 12. The Sharks were 0 for 2
with the man advantage and Mooretown went 0 for
4 on the power play this period.
Mooretown got into
penalty trouble early in the period and it would
cost them a goal. With Clark MacPherson off at
6:16 for tripping, Nick Butts lit the
lamp for the visitors 28 seconds later as he
tapped a falling puck into the net that was
about shoulder height and over the stick side of
Washer. Assists went to Burke D'Souza
and Anthony Camara. The Sharks took the
lead for the first time in the game on a Dean
Mastronardi goal and never looked back.
Assist went to Todd Holland and
Anthony Camara. With 31 seconds left on the
clock, Kyle Washer came out of his net - about
3/4 of the length between the blue line and the
goal line - to play the puck when he was bowled
over by Brad Quinlan of Wheatley. A few heated
words were exchanged and as a result Mike Burns
of Mooretown received a 10 minutes misconduct
for inciting an opponent while Quinlan received
a five minute major for charging and a game
misconduct. Serving the major was Patrick
Benson. As a result of this play, Washer left
the game and taking his place was Justin
Belanger. Shots on goal: Wheatley - 12/19
Mooretown - 8/20. The Sharks were 1 for 3 with
the man advantage and the Flags were 0 for 2 on
the power play.
With the teams playing four a side early in the
third period, Wheatley struck for a goal and
took a two goal lead on a Trevor Grieve
marker from Kurtis Ouellette and Tyler
Quigley. The Flags again got into penalty
trouble and found themselves short by two
players for 1:30 but still managed a couple of
good short-handed chances. Mooretown cut the
lead to one on a marker at 14:06 off the stick
of Adam Teschke with assists picked up by
Spencer Lightfoot and Aaron Schieman.
The winning goal came at 15:11 and was scored by
Tyler Quigley from Josh Carnevale
and Trevor Grieve. The Flags refused to
give up and at 18:35 made it a one goal game.
Notching the goal was Jordan Pennesi with
assists to Darby MacKinnon and Nick
Kozim. During the final minute of play the
Flags pulled their goaltender for an extra
attacker and although they maintained possession
of the puck for the most part, too little of the
time was spent in the offensive end and Tremblay
came up steady with the saves he needed. Shots
on goal: Wheatley - 10/29 Mooretown -
12/32. The Sharks were 0 for 3 with the man
advantage this period and were 1 for 8 in the
game. The Flags were 0 for 1 on the power play
this period and were 0 for 7 in the game.
Three Stars:
1st - Trevor
Grieve (WHE) -- 1g 1a
2nd - Tyler
Quigley (WHE) -- 1g 1a
3rd - Jeff Paulley
(MRT)
