Flags Come
Up With BIG Win Against the Blades
Final
Score: Blenheim - 2 Mooretown - 10
by Deb
Lawrence
It was a small
crowd that took in the game on a blustery
night, but those that did were treated to a
bit of everything - lots of goals, some good
stops and a couple of tilts. In goal for
Blenheim was James Tetreault and
picking up the win for the Flags was
Justin Belanger.
In the first
period, the Flags did something they had not
done yet in the first period - score FOUR
goals. They began with a power play marker
at 1:44 when Jordan Pennesi banged
one in while Darcy Falconer was off serving
a minor for roughing. Assist on the goal
went to Donny Bowling and Raymond
Martin. Then the treks to the sin bin
began and they continued one after another
until Mooretown got their second marker.
Notching the goal at 10:11 was Donny
Bowling with Jack Garrettson and
Steve Mercier picking up the assists.
A roughing minor at 1:53 put Clark
MacPherson in the penalty box and it was the
Flags who scored a short-handed marker35
seconds later. Lighting the lamp was
Spencer Lightfoot from Raymond Martin
and Travis Mullen. With 3:50
remaining in the period Mike Burns
gave his team a four goal lead to take into
the dressing room. Assisting on this goal
were Jack Garrettson and Josh
Teschke. Shots on goal: Blenheim -
12 Mooretown - 9. The Blades were 0 for 2
with the man advantage and Mooretown was 1
for 3 on the power play this period.
In the second
stanza things settled down a bit but the
Flags did benefit by being on the power play
- twice. Their first power play goal this
period came while Thomas Innes was off for
interference at the 9:26 mark and banging
one one for the home team 44 seconds later
was Alex Dawson. Drawing the lone
assist on the goal was Darby MacKinnon.
Mooretown's specialty teams went to work
again with Ben Campbell of the Blades off at
15:59 for interference. Exactly 20 seconds
later the Flags had a six goal lead on a
power play goal off the stick of Jeff
Paulley with helpers from Jordan
Pennesi and Donny Bowling.
Mooretown experienced some five on three
play - for 51 seconds - but instead of
scoring with either a one or two man
advantage, they gave up a short handed
marker with 14 seconds remaining in the
period. Spoiling Belanger's bid for a
shutout was Thomas Innes with assists
to Tim Doermer and Nathan
Puchnatyj. Shots on goal: Blenheim -
11/23 Mooretown - 17/26. The Blades were 0
for 2 with the man advantage and Mooretown
was 2 for 4 on the power play this period.
The third period got a bit goofy and
prolonged beginning with a couple of tilts
just 2:14 in. As a result, a player from
each team will likely be sitting out an
extra game - Kyle Fiorini of Blenheim and
Mooretown's Aaron Schieman since their bout
was the second one in the same stoppage.
While Joey Ray of the Blades was in the box
serving a 10 minute misconduct that began at
the 4:21 mark, it seemed he had a few words
to say at the end of yet another tilt and as
a result Ray was handed a game misconduct
and and early shower. A cross checking
minor at 9:04 sent Raymond Martin of
Mooretown to the sin bin and he was joined
36 seconds later when team mate Alex Dawson
was called for a tripping minor giving the
Blades an extended five on three power play
opportunity. They notched one at the 10:18
mark when Darcy Falconer fired one
home for the visitors. It would be their
final marker of the game. Assists went to
Tim Doermer and Mark Hazeleger.
Not to be outdone the Flags notched their
second short-handed goal of the game. It
would come 18 seconds later off the stick of
Mike Burns with assists going to
Josh Teschke and Raymond Martin.
Goal number eight was a Darby MacKinnon
marker and picking up assists were Jordan
Pennesi and Adam Little.
Blenheim's goaltender - James Tetreault -
was given a double slashing minor as he took
exception to Flags players near his crease.
Mooretown responded with their fourth
powerplay goal at the 16:27 mark on a
Jordan Pennesi goal from Clark
MacPherson and Darby MacKinnon.
With 1:40 remaining in the period
Mooretown's Nick Kozmin picked up a two
minute minor for roughing but Blenheim's
Nathan Puchnatyj was given a double roughing
minor and a 10 minute misconduct and the
Flags were again playing with the extra
man. They took just 13 seconds to score yet
another power play goal, this one off the
stick of Adam Little while Jordan
Pennesi picked up the single assist.
Shots on goal: Blenheim - 12/35 Mooretown
- 21/47. The Blades were 1 for 2 with the
man advantage this period and were 1 for 6
in the game. Mooretown was 2 for 3 on the
power play this period and were 5 for 10 in
the game.
